98 V70 - Need wiper piece... whole thing or just a part?

Here's the pic:

Do I need to buy the whole wiper or just a cap to cover the nut?

Also, this wiper seems to stick in the up position quite often... Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

Cap is part of the arm.
The arm sticks up because that motor is shot and it will "park" whereever it pleases.
Way too much to install one, most just disconnect them at this point

FCP Groton sells the arm for $35. Did you try tightening the retaining nut to prevent the arm from sticking in the up position? Also, I believe the motor shaft is splined and mates with the hole on the arm (the hole is splined as well, I think). I wonder if the splining on the shaft or arm is stripped, causing the arm to stay in the up position. I find these wipers a bit of a gimmick, unless you are doing a lot of high-speed driving in snow and slush. Otherwise, the money is better spent on other Volvo projects.

To remove the wiper try this.

you need to lift up the nut fastener cover (whats missing in your picture) to remove the nut holding the arm.

Before removing the nut you should use a plier to hold the shaft in place. You might want to spray the area with penetrating oil before you attemt this.

Before you write off your motor you should have a look at the connections which are on the inside of the bumber area.

heres a pic... you can get the genuine volvo ones for $30 on the carvlvo.com site.

Im not a big fan of that wiper system... one guy at a recent car rally recently commented .. i think people like them because they give the impression it is a high end car..like a mercedes ;)
