New to volvo, need help, won't start

Post by Stressed out jack »

Hello just bought this car that ran great for the 1st few days, then out of nowhere it sputtered out and died, I got it to hard start and drove a little further and died again. So I hit the foums first, put in new fuel pump, tried the jump wire on the fuel pump relay, new fuel filter. Now it will start right up first try then after a minute or so dies and won't even hard start after that. Only thing I could think at this point is I put the wrong gas in?? Lol 85 unleaded. Please tell me it's not because of the wrong fuel. What else can I try?

If it's a 1996 you have a conventional electronic ignition with a bunch of wear parts to consider.

Take a look at the " no start " thread above and run through these steps and. Post results here

The owners manual recommends 91+, but I doubt that is the problem. What codes are in the system?

I'm unable to scan it, so can't get codes, might be able to get my hands on a scanned tool later this week. And I'm unable to find the thread "no start" when I try to search it it brings up my own post. Can someone post the link on here

Here is the no-start thread Steve was referring to: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=64931

My first thought is to check the fuel pressure regulator on a hunch; that is easy to do. But it could be a lot of things, like the ECT sensor etc. Check out the no-start thread, be systematic, see where it leads.

You can get the codes scanned for free at Autozone or the like, but I guess you can't drive this car so that may not help much.

No on your choice of gas.
The list is long and rather extensive. Thus don't guess and reinvent the wheel. See the No Start Thread and proceed from there.
I thought 95's had a built-in code retriever?
