2003 Volvo C70 Timing Problem
let me re-phrase my earlier post. i had a blown head gasket so i took off the head, had it re-surfaced, put new gasket.re-installed camshafts, set my timing marks correctly and installed timing belt. went to rotate engine 2 turns like im suppose to and the engine stops turning dead at 90 degrees! feels like its hitting a valve but how could it be? i noticed when i was trying to re-install the cam cover i coulnt get the rear of the exhaust cam to go down so the cover would go down untill i slightly turned the exhaust camshaft . then it went on ok. i then slightly turned the cam back where it was and re-installed the cam holding tool, lined my cam gears and crank gears on mark and installed belt.turned crank 90 degrees and clunk!! stopped dead. i cant figure what i'm doing wrong. is it something to do with the exhaust vvt gear or whatever its called? its not spring loaded, at least it dont feel like it. 2003 volvo c70 2.4 turbo. thanks for any help! about to pull my hair out next!

Sounds like somehow things got mis-alligned in the process. From the back of engine you can always realign if need be. Extra work but at least you caught the mis-alignment by hand turning crank.

For gasoline engine, 2 rotations of the CRANK = 1 rotation of the CAM.
So, if the cams were inadvertently moved 1 rotation, it is out of sync!
Did you move the cams or crank when the TB was removed?

when i took off the timing belt, all marks were aligned. i removed the cams and had the head re-surfaced. i never took the gears off the cams or anything. i marked their position before i removed them from the head and re-insalled them accordingly. i used a homemade tool to align the back of the camshafts. marks and gears and crank were on spot when i put the belt back on. by the way, when i was putting the cam cover back on i had problem getting the rear of the exhaust cam to go down so the cover would go on. i had to turn cam just a little before it would go down but after i got the cover on i re-aligned the cams and re-installed the holding tool before timing the engine and installing the belt. something is hitting at a quarter of turn of the crank. got me stumped!

When reading your post, several statements conflict. Timing set before belt removed, used marks, made marks, marked back of cams, etc. Lots to confuse me...

no i didnt remove crank gear! let me try one more time. i had a blown head gasket. before removing the timing belt to remove head, i lined everything up and marked my cam gears, my crank gears and even marked my timing belt with white paint so i could put everything back like it was. i even marked the camshafts in relation to the head so i could put them back exactly like they were. when i put everything back togather, i had trouble getting the cam cover to go down at the rear of the exhaust cam. i had to turn the exhaust cam just a slight bit before the cam cover would go all the way down. after torqueing my cam cover bolts i then lined up my camshaft gears and made sure my crankshaft hadn't moved and then installed the belt. i tthen proceeded to rotate the engine 2 full turns to make sure everything was set right. i got the engine turned about 90 degrees and it stopped turning! clunk is the sound it made. felt like i am hitting a valve. dont think i can explain it more simple than that.
