Re-routing 12v rear power jack / cigarette lighter

Post by SonicAdventure »

Hi everyone, I am thinking about removing the rear console cigarette lighter / 12v jack from the console and relocating it up to the front of the dash area to power an accessory. Here are my questions:

1. What direction is this wiring run? I assume it runs front to back, and that I could simply remove it from the console, plug the hole and relocate it. My end goal is to have it near the glove box if possible.

2. Fusing: is this power jack fused with the other 12v jack in the front of the console or separately?

I hardly ever have anyone in the rear seats and even if they did they don't need a power jack. And they certainly don't need a cigarette lighter...

Why not use the thoughtfully provided accessory
power connector that's already there in your dash?

I pulled a console from a 99 recently and will see if I can discover wiring. I think it is front to back, with 99 % certainty.

I thought about that, but the CB I am going to use is already wired with a 12v socket plug, and rather than cut it off and hardwire it. If I was running something without the plug I would use the accessory adapter.

I was actually at the junkyard this morning and I kind of answered my own question by looking at a console that was torn out of a 1999 S70. The rear 12v socket is wired front to back and can def. be rerouted further up.

I did something similar, but I tapped into the 12 volt power lines on the radio harness. Completely reversible, and the rear cig lighter still works.
