servicing PCV system

Post by Mike850 »

I have discovered that the cause of my oil leak on the passenger side is oil coming from the hose that plugs into the top of the head right next to sparkplug boot number two and also next to the oil filler cap. (Is that a pcv hose?) That hose is oily inside and oil is filling in those valleys on top of the head which then flows over the side and underneath the plastic timing cover and dripping onto the ground. I removed the plastic timing cover and no oil is on the belt. The belt looks almost new.

I have searched but haven't been able to find a real dedicated forum or site that gives clear instructions on how to service/clean your pcv system. I find bits and pieces. I did service the flametrap. But I need to know if that oily hose going into the head is the result of that black box (oil trap) that is clogged and needs replacing or not. Since the box, hoses ect. are all "genuine Volvo" from fcpgroton, you pay a price premium and I don't want to buy what I don't need. If I can clean it with solvents and air compressor, fine. But I need to know at what point do you just replace? Thank you!

Yes, the oily hose is part of the PCV system and leads off directly from the black box or oil separator/trap. Cleaning the entire system or replacing it and using a good clamp on the top that cinches it down so it's tight and doesn't have a leak helps a lot. I went through the exact same thing you're going through a little over a year ago.

Im assuming that the function of the oil seperator "black box" is to collect oil from the crank case vapors so when the vapors are recycled back into the combustion chamber it doesn't quickly foul spark plugs ect., and it must be full of oil or clogged. That might explain why the hose leading from it and inserting into the head was oily. (Also, I discovered mine wasn't even clamped onto the nipple on the head--it was just pressed on there!!) Not knowing if that oil seperator can be drained or cleaned I went ahead and ordered a new one from fcp groton ($31) plus an intake manifold gasket since the intake has to be removed to access the oil seperator.

If your getting that much oil in your cooling system then I would bet your cylinder head has a crack or your head gasket job is causing your problem.
My first question is if your car ever overheated and what did your old head gasket show? Was there evidence of a breach between any of the port holes on it?If your car ever overheated that can cause a cracked head.
Second question, When you did your head gasket job,did you throughly clean both the block and the head really well without scratching either surface?
Third question, Did you torque the cylinder head bolts in the proper tightening sequence and torque stages and then I think the last stage is to turn each bolt a certain amount of degrees past the last torque ,also did you lightly oil the threads on the headbolts and also did you clean out the engine block bolt holes for the cylinder head.

OK, I'm not sure you gonna wanna hear this, but...

I have a '94 2.3 Turbo also (T5 here in the UK) it has now done 242000 miles (and I don't drive lightly !) - so that was the good news.

At 95000 miles a routine service picked up oil in the coolant. In it went for a suspected radiator problem - not the rad.

Head came off, not the gasket, head went for crack testing, no issues.
Turbo came off, went for crack testing, no issues. In the end the Volvo dealer then stripped the block and [here's the crunch] separated the two halves of the block - both halves were then crack tested and no issues found. They then re-glued (or whatever) the 2 halves back together, rebuilt the engine (without new parts, only gaskets/seals etc) and as i say it has now done 242000 miles and is going VERY well :-)

They can only conclude it was the bonding between the 2 halves of the block that had broken down.

Good luck !!

Man, that wouldn't be cool. If the seal between the block halves was deteriorating, I would imagine you'd also have a nasty oil leak too.

Well, only to start with. It appeared that the oil took over the water system, the expansion tank was completely filled with oil just before the repair.

At the time my local dealer scanned the worldwide database of faults on 850 models, no one else had reported the same fault, now seems like there's a few more.
