92 Volvo 740; Issues with Revving

Post by Jacqui »

Hiya Everyone,
I'm new to the Forum, but not new to Volvos. I have been so well loved by my family that they had arranged to ensure I was in a Volvo.

I am now driving a "hand-me-down" of uncertain history. Its a 1992 - 740 automatic, and I had been told it had an oil leak on the rear seal.

What my problem is, though, is when I have been driving for awhile (in Houston, TX weather - blech) and the engine has warmed up, when I am stopped at a red light [car in gear, foot on brake] the engine revs and I can feel the car trying to 'push away'. Also if I get stuck in traffic and have to speed up/slow down sometimes the idle drops too far and the engine dies. Generally when this happens I am able to get my car re-started pretty quickly.

Since I have had the car we have changed out the spark plugs and wires, changed out the starter, replaced the radiator and hoses, and of course regular filter changes - but I have not been able to verify/repair the oil leak yet.

Could this issue be something that was exacerbated by the oil leak, or is this an unrelated issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I wanted to make sure I have enough info for you guys (since I can only use alliteration instead of mechanics).

Some of the other sounds I hear during normal driving are like a loose, rattling noise under the hood - its not very loud though. Maybe a valve cover?

Also I have noticed small backfires, instead of being the loud gunshot-style sound one associates with a car backfire, these are more like little poot-ey fart-type sounds. Its almost cute, but I know it signals that something needs to fixed pretty quick!

PS: To Chris K Maniac, I have downloaded your posts about the fuel filter sock etc... and am researching that possibility with my poor baby; however I am all ears if anyone has any other ideas as well.

Welcome to Matthew Volvo Site.

With your descriptions of problems we don't need mechanical terminology!!

Here's something you can do to help your baby. Check for fault codes in the self diagnostic box. It is headed for a 92 740 but applies to your car too. Post the codes, if any, for more help.
