Cranks, no start. Starter issue? 2001 S60 na/auto

Post by dave22r »

Ok so I have this S60. Ran great last week. I parked it Thursday for the weekend and it wouldn't start Monday morning. I've spent a while online and couldn't find a solution so here I am :x

Here's where I'm at.....
It cranks (maybe a little weak?)
The battery is a year old. Tried jumping it just because, no difference in cranking speed
I checked a bunch of fuses and they look good
There seems to be fuel pressure with my hillbilly test. After cranking, I pressed the fuel rail valve and it shoots out fuel for a sec. Crank again and it's pressurized again.
I have NOT checked spark. Home alone today...
I've had a CEL on for eons. I don't remember what it read a year last i checked it but it wasn't catastrophic. Today on my $10 tester it showed P0171, P0133, P1103, P0420. That may just be because it isn't starting?? I know you need a kidney priced code reader to accurately check this car but that's what I have.

Soooooo my game plan is buy a spark test light (I'm dumb, yes I need one) and check spark. If that checks out I was thinking about pulling the starter and getting that tested.

What else is there to look at? I know these things have odd things to check.

Btw, first post but I lurk on here all the time. Y'all have been a huge help with a lot on this beast! :D

So I got some (cold) time to mess with the dead car today. Before pulling the starter I figured I'd check spark. Well when I pulled off my coils, a few of the plugs were drowning in oil. Spent a better part of the time cleaning up that mess and i'll be buying a new oil cap seal. I put new plugs in it just because (warranty). Couldn't check spark because the test light I bought was too short. I'll probably buy a new light tomorrow. :x

Any other ideas....? I'm still very lost. Trying to avoid towing it into the shop.

Your car has coil on plug ignition, if a coil goes it can cause a no start but usually you will get a cylinder or two kicking at least?

Are you getting any firing? A can of starter fluid will tell yo u if you have a fuel or spark problem. If it fires on ether, you have to get the fuel pressure checked, although you can try jumping the fuel pump relay as a cheap test for that.
Don't run that battery down cranking!

I get one or 2 kicks but there is nothing that sounds like actual starting. A couple of the coils were taking an oil bath, so maybe one died...?
I didn't have any starting fluid in the garage; it's on the shopping list! So having fuel pressure at the rail doesn't clear me from a fuel problem?
Just put the battery on the charger. If I kill it, walmart warranty!

And that's a negative on the starter fluid. Same result. Probably no spark.

Check fire 12 volts on each coil. There is A thread with the coil pin assignments

OH MY GOD.... So I ruled out the battery. It's a year old and OReilleys said it was good. It wouldn't take a jump so probably not the battery. So after ripping apart half the car and everything testing good I threw the battery in from my truck. It choked for a few seconds then fired right up.

Thanks for the help Mr. Abscate, I'm sure it would have been good advice if I wasn't a bellend....

Please use the space below to make fun of me and my mediocre mechanical ability.

There is no judging on MVS...we have all done idiot things working on our cars, and diagnosing a battery that cranks wells with a jump and won't start is a subtle one. You may have slightly flooded it with the first no start and needed time to clear that out.

We did have someone here who put his intercooler in upside down and thought he could just run the engine backwards to fix it, we didn't even make fun of him....ok, a little bit.
