Hello, new to the Volvo game but have been a euro guy sense my X-type jag and w124 benz.
On my 2004.5 S40 T5
I swapped the timing belt, and the car started up fine! no lights or nothing. I disconnected my battery as a safety thing and out of habit. after doing the work, I started the car and all went well. No issues, no check engine signs. till the next day, I started my car up and I had a check engine light on. I went to get the code scanned said both my cam and crank where the issue.. so I checked and turn the car over by hand again to make sure I was still timed ok and noticed after doing a rotation my exhaust cam was off time by two teeth.. I attempt to get It back in time but I had no luck.. Im very new to doing this on Volvos. but do I just keep rotating till the marks line up?? or could my sensors really be the problem?
some advise on how to resolve this would be killer!.. Thank you. P.S. I just got the car so need to make this right lol

If your teeth are off, then they're off. The only way to deal with this is to take the belt off and go at it again. I think probably the issue is with the CVVT (hubs on each side on the front of the engine that adjusts timing due to ambient temp conditions, mixture of air/gas etc. Differences in temps between when you did the job and the next day were different, which means that most likely the hubs weren't sprung forwards to torque when you put your belt on and then after awhile they caused the 2 teeth off scenario. Read up on winding the CVVT hubs forward (or actually clockwise) when you install your belt. 2 teeth = no damage so that's very good. This is not an uncommon issue. Btw, there is a whole section on this over on Swedespeed with pictures if you haven't already checked that out.
