00 V70 xc ets light, no cruise, MAF bad, CEL

Post by ems_kws »

Just got a 00 XC. Test drove it and things were fine except for some old fuel. Bought and the next morning MAF sensor is no good. It runs slow, shift horribly, and has no power. Unplugged it and the car runs great except. No cruise control now and the ets light is on and staying on along with the CEL.
Driving it 4 hour home produced no change. Running out the old fuel seemed to make it run a bit smoother but both lights are still on an still no cruise.
My first cross country so were do I start.I've searched the forums but haven't found anything with my symptoms together.

Just took the map sensor out to clean it and it looks brand new. It is a bosch. Previous owner mentioned that he replace d the O2 sensor and some others.

Any orange arrow on the dash?
No power: does it seem like its in limp mode?
Volvo had a recall for the ETS but unfortunately it was for 10 years.
Go to Autozone or somewhere and find out what CEL code it is.

Orange arrow only if I turn on winter mode for the tranny. Code is 1171 according to AutoZone.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Thanks. Any idea what is the most current Bosch PN for the updated MAF ? Rockwell lists two different Bosch sensors as available one for $88 and the other for about $110.

Hold off on that MAF purchase unless you like collecting new parts for the shelf. Also, old fuel is not the problem. Fuel doesn't age and cause misfiring in cars, despite many reports to the contrary.

You probably have a hole or loose clamp in the induction path between the turbo and the throttle body. You've got a lot of symptoms pointing to that.

That P1171 code is telling you your fuel trims are way out of range, the poor running is confusing the ECU and ETM combo popping that code, the ETS warning is disabling cruise as a safety measure.

Unplugging the MAF makes the car run on a lookup table which is stable, so that helps get you home.

Get it home and look up the induction diagram, take it all off and look for splits holes loose clamps from turbo to ETB. Common fail points are at the intercooler, top and bottom, like in this thread.

Thanks. Will do it this afternoon. Took a drive this morning and the CEL came back on. It barely gets to 75 on the interstate but for now the cruise maintains fine when ever I use it. Now that the cel is on Ill stop and get the codes checked again.
Any idea if the turbo and intercooler from a 94 850 is the same as the 00 V70? I have a parts car that I can rob a lot from until it goes to the junk yard or someone buys it.

Im pretty sure a 1994 part won't fit. There was a big change in engine management in 1999 that changed most everything on these cars. If you got to FCP website you can pull up the intercooler part number and see if it is the same for each one, of course.

Pulled the 94 MAF to see if it was the same. They are not but it looks like the P/N for the intercoolers are the same.
I went through the Air intake system and found a couple of minor possibilities but after reconnecting the battery and starting it up again it acted the same. On start up it has no acceleration and I have to feather the throttle to the floor several times in order for it to begin working. Once it works again it has no power to speak of to really get up and get going at traffic speeds.
Im also going to buy a pressure gauge and pipe ends so I can pressurize the air system with the engine air intake side plugged and the air box side plugged with a valve in it to see if I have a mystery leak. Had to do it on a Cummins one time and it worked.
