Sunroof wont' tilt up all the way

Post by bob850 »

'97 850 GLT wagon.

Problem: The sunroof slides forward and backward fine, but when I try to tilt it up, it only goes up about an inch, then just stops (not even close to open all the way). I can close it back down fine.

Any ideas on the cause? I don't really care about the tilt function, but I wanted to adjust the height of the sunroof when closed using the adjustment torx screws on the sides, and need to tilt it up to access them (I want to adjust it because the top of the glass seal is a bit above the roof line, and I think is causing wind noise). I found a write up in the VADIS that specified how many millimeters below the roof it should be.

Anyway, I can't get it to tilt up to access the screws. Any advice would be appreciated. I already checked in the parts I could see and didn't see any debris. Of course, I can't see back in the hidden rear part.

So I fiddled with it some more, gave the glass a push while holding the switch, and it went up. Still not sure what the issue was, but it goes up now on its own.

At that age, I'd guess it's time to pull the glass, clean & re-grease the sliders + lifter mechanism. I need to do same on mine. I also have rust to deal with where water seeped in between the weatherstripping and glass. Fortunately, the only rust on the whole sled.

Same here, the only rust I have. I used rust converter to make it more stable and prevent further rust.
