V70 automatic transmission

Post by johnhb »

Driving to church yesterday there was 'clunk' as I rounded the round-about and the Volvo rolled to a stop. Tried putting the drive selector to 1 & 2 but no go. No Reverse also. When I put drive selector into Park there is a short grinding noise but the Park does not lock the transmission.
Can these automatic transmission units be repaired by a home mechanic or is there some special tools and software etc needed?
Disappointed at this as I have just spent AU$500 to replace timing belt, water pump etc, camshaft seals and reseal upper cylinder block.

Hey johnhb, sorry to hear about the troubles. Especially after giving your car the service she deserves!

How's the transmission fluid? Did you let it get all black and burnt? I've read a lot of posts here and usually drivers point to sporadic issues that become more and more frequent before a transmission goes out...

No the transmission fluid still has a red tint. I did a drain and refill about 12 months ago.

Sounds more like an axle popped out than the transmission itself since park won't work and it grinds going to park. The left hand axle is where I would start.

The replies sound plausible, and I am no trans expert by a long shot, but why would the trans shifter not return to P? I can understand the axle may pop out or even a CV break, but for my education, why does that affect the shifter leaver? Is it because if an axle popped out you loose fluid pressure preventing shifting of the solenoids?

Thanks,

Neil.

If the axle popped out, that would cause it to grind and barely move(the axle that popped out would of been spinning making the TCM think it's slipping). However that should have no impact on the shifter itself, are you saying the shifter is hard to move? Another thing would be to check the shifter linkage maybe it was loose and when you move it from P to RD12 etc. It does not actually change the gears, but at that point you would feel the shifter moving freely and not feel resistance on it. So to recap if the shifter moves normally but it didn't go into gear and grinds when you put it back in park I would def suspect a popped axle, get underneath it and let us know

Bad CV is my guess. Slide under it and look for globs of grease, a broken shaft, or even just a section not slide into the trans case coming from the knuckle.

Thank you to all those who have submitted possible answers to my problem. Much appreciated. I will be home this afternoon and will raise the Volvo and take a look at the CV's etc. Would never have thought of looking there.
And yes, when I move the drive selector the selector on the transmission does move - check that - so it's definitely not a loose or broken cable. Wish it was so simple.

OK, I've put the Volvo up on stands. When I rotate the RH (driver's) side wheel the LH side wheel rotates in reverse and vice versa for the LH wheel. I assume from this that there is no broken connections through the transaxles. Also took a look underneath and all seems ok. Cannot see any axle out of place. It was only last year, about 12 months ago actually, that I renewed the boots etc on both sides. Still, with the drive selector in Park I would have suspected that I could not turn either front wheel. This is not boding well.
