850: Part differences from auto/manual

Post by Yeslekquinn »

Hey yal, first time posting but third time Volvo 850 owner.

I am parting out my 1997 Volvo 850 glt (minor wreck) to my now newest addition to the family tree, a 1994 Volvo 850 which is a Standard and 5-speed manual transmission.

The 94 manual only "needs" a Passenger side Axel but is running fine on it now for alittle while. I simply want to part out all I can from my 97 so if my 94 manual ever needs something i'll have it around... Conveniently, I just replaced my Passenger axle in the 97, but does this part fit different from an automatic vehicle to a manual??

And therefore, is there any other differences in parts I should be aware of that will not be compatible as I'm deciding what to part out?

Thanks!!

Welcome PA Volvoist!

One way to check compatability on parts is to pull up the part number on the EEURO, IPD, OR FCPEURO parts vendor sites for the two cars and see if the same number comes up.

I'm pretty sure your driveshafts are different, though.

The stickshift crew on MVS are an exclusive bunch, welcome!

On the 850, axles are not interchangeable between manual and automatic transmissions. The shaft is a different diameter where it enters the transmission.

Almost every other part on the two cars is exactly the same.

I have swapped axles between manual and automatic with no problem- some have larger diameters but the spline ends and lengths are the same

That is interesting, thanks for posting.

I've never owned a manual so now we are getting into the "what-I-have read" zone (dangerous place!), but I understand the axle seals are also different diameter on the sealing surface, and the manual axle is the one that is larger diameter. I am going to guess you have put a manual axle into an automatic? Because you could install a larger axle (manual) into a smaller seal (auto trans) and still get a seal, but of course a smaller axle (auto) into a larger diameter seal (manual axle) would leak out the trans oil.

Did you put a manual axle into an auto, or the other way around?

False.

I am using auto axles with my manual transmission.

Sheesh, I have posted that comment several times. Hopefully I can remember this correction.

Always good to have the truth!

On my 1999 I certainly remember being asked and having different part numbers for AT and MT.

There are certainly more than two part numbers covering P80 driveshafts.

But isn't the AT in 99 up models different than up to 98? i remember a V70 version with 2 and 3 buttons. But then, i've never been in a first gen V70.

99 up axles should have a bolt at the wheel end- but I have seen a few with the nut-
