Volvo V70 Fault codes

Post by johnhb »

My 1997 Volvo V70 has an OBDII socket mounted in the console between the front seats. I have searched the internet but am getting confused messages as to 1/ How to read the codes and 2/ What the codes mean.

Here's what I've done so far. Connected a simple LED Pushbutton arrangement to the following pins
16 - 12V+
4 or 5 - Chassis and Signal ground
13 - not sure what this does but this is the only connection that gives me a reading. The code I'm getting is 1 2 2 with ignition position set to II.

That is, I press the button for about 1 second, there is a delay then one flash, a delay then two flashes, a delay then two flashes then nothing unless I press the button again.
I see on this site an articles about 1996-1998 codes but it states they are 4 digit. I am only getting three.
My OBDII socket only has the following contacts - Pin 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 13 & 16. There are no connections to the other holes in the socket.
I believe this is either ISO 9141-2K live or ISO142304-4 KWP.

I have not been able to find out how to reset the codes. There is no jumper box under the bonnet to select from where the diagnostic code is being read from.

Hope someone can help.

The simplest way to get engine codes is to use an OBD-II scan tool rather than trying to use an OBD-I flash code system. The Bosch Motronic 4.3 supports flash codes through the OBD-II port but I'm not sure about other ECUs. Since you technically have a European spec car then you may or may not even have a Bosch ECU. The flash codes are different for the Fenix and the Bosch systems but they are all reported accurately with the OBD-II P codes.
