I have been getting the same problem on my 2001 v70 last two months. Usually I just turn off key and restart and the problem clears. Sometimes it takes longer to clear than others. I have cleaned all ground connections and battery terminals. Still happens now and then. Get a clicking sound in the middle of console when it happens on starting. May try a new battery if that could be it. Mine is very old, but has not failed me yet.
Says same thing about brake failure. If I ever solve the mystery I will post.

I have a 2001 volvo v70, same problem, comes and goes. Did rain hard and wind last night, now wont start. Usually after turning it off and on, it goes. Not this time. 209000 mi, been doing this for months, but seems to be a steady problem. Changed the battery and that did not do it. Cleaned all ground wires I could find and shook all relays and fuses. Going to try to clean the positive terminals by fuse box now. Help!

Well add me to the bunch, 2001 v70. Same crap. No problems till 208000 miles. Going out now for another look and to clean positive leads by fusebox under hood. If I win the battle I will post again.

OK, I may be jumping the gun here but have been trying this and that for months trying to solve this same problem. So far have cleaned all grounds I could get to, checked and wiggled all fuses and relays, installed new battery, which seemed to help a Little till today. Now just removed and cleaned with sandpaper the two red wires that hook up behind fuse box under the hood. They were slightly gray and needed it. Well, I took a short ride since it started right up after that. I did have to disconnect the positive terminal on battery to clean the terminals by fuse box, (which seems to reset this problem), but my car has not had that much pep in a long time. I don't believe it is my imagination either. Will keep you posted after a week to see if this lasts. I hope so. Love this 2001 v70 with 209000 miles on it. Not ready to part with it or spend mucho dollars fixing it.

I have a 2011 XC70 D5 Se Lux which has similar problems to your car. would be interested to know if cleaning up the pair of cables to your CEM fixed the problem, so far I have spent £900 (which was heavily discounted) with a Volvo dealer who couldn't find the problem, and have now asked a specialist firm that look after cars that are slightly older and not serviced by Volvo main dealers to look at it, I think they may have a better knowledge of sorting these sort of problems which are probably age related . I would be interested to know the outcome of your problem as you haven't put any other comments since March of last year.
