Discovered that transmission working again after I fiddled with the LH & RH wheels. Just turned them by hand and decided to give the car a try up and down the driveway.
Took car for a test drive on Thursday March 16. LH & RH turns, up and down through gears, hard accelerations and over a few bumps. No problems. However driving home Thursday night, as I executed a LH turn the same problem surfaced. Had car trucked home again.
Friday morning jacked up RH side of car, started engine put into Reverse, there was a clunk and the just engine noise. Lowered car and all working well up and down the driveway. Afraid to go out on road again - don't want to call tow truck a third time.
Have since removed LH axle. Cannot see any problems. Had to use wedge to get axle from transmission and axle was securely connected to hub. Definitely no chance to pop axle out.
Next task is to check the PNP switch.

Left hand turns load the right hand axle, I think I would be looking at that one first? Is the carrier bearing tightened proper on that side (oh, unless this is RHD car ...)?

PnP switch don't have those symptoms.
Something is disengaging from transmission or axles popping out from cv joints.

OK sounds good.
But what I'm saying is, I would suspect the right hand axle from the symptoms, if in fact there is a pattern to them. So there is no carrier bearing issue since it is RH drive, but still the right hand axle is the one to look at. It's a hassle but I would drop the control arm and pop it out with a chisel or a wooden wedge.

I have pulled out both LH and RH axles and could not see any problems. No spline damage, not blobs of grease, no broken or disconnected axles. The boots etc were replaced about 18 months ago. Carrier bearing on the RH side is fine. Short of an axle breaking there was no way that either axle could pop out of the transaxle.
Next stop is to check the solenoids as per the AW50-42LE manual I found online.
I haven't been brave enough to take the car out on the road again.
Thanks everyone for your input.

Boots on CV joints?
Did you actually checked CV joints? Is circlip on it's place?Did you checked if axle is popping out from CV joint?
Once again,i doubt that you have a transmission problem. It's something simple which is overlooked everytime.

misha, I've been following this thread for a bit now. The symptoms the OP is suffering make absolutely no sense... If it were a PNP switch or a transmission solenoid issue, he'd get a code for sure...
I was wondering what the shifter-selecter and the linkages under the boot look like... do you think something might be broken or shorted out there that could be causing this intermittent issue? It seems like if the OP lifts the car or moves it, it starts to run again. I really think it's something that wouldn't throw a code... moving the car seems to "reset" the no drive scenario.
But you're making me thing maybe he should replace the axles and see if that takes care of the problem... Can't wait until he figures this one out...

Yes I did check that the axles had not popped out from the CV joints.
misha, are you recommending that I remove the boot covering the CV joint and do a detailed inspection?
I would have thought that applying the brakes and engaging Drive and Reverse while revving the engine would have put significant strain on the CV joint that any weakness would have manifested itself.
I agree that a transmission fault should show up a code. With my very crude code checker I am getting a 122 reading. That may indicate a problem with solenoid 1 on the transmission or just a false reading. Waiting to receiver a better code reader which hopefully will give me more insight

Howdy all,
Did this problem ever got sorted out? I am having he exact same issue except that I haven’t had the car out to drive in a few weeks as I have had it on stands.
Recently replace struts, sway bar end links brake pads and removed the AWD driveshaft. Put everything back together and car won’t move. Was moving fine before I did this work. When putting back into park from reverse, grinding sound as indicated by OP. Removed both half-shafts thinking that one was misseated from the work I did. Start car, put in gear and noise still happens so it’s not coming from the axles. HELP!! Thanks in advance.
