Me Too - 2006 XC70 hard shifting

Post by stoutlogic »

Hello All,
I’ve updated one of my rides from a 1998 V70 T5 to a 2006 XC70. This is my ride to cart the dogs , Home Depot runs and such. The car’s interior and exterior are in very good shape. 140k on the odometer, all but the last 6 months it’s been serviced at the Volvo dealership by prior owner. I have paperwork for all prior work.
I fear I have what appears to be a dreaded transmission problem. The car occasionally has hard shifts mainly downshifting but sometimes up shifting. It most frequently occurs when coming to a stop downshifting second to first gear. Additionally upon take off it feels as if the car will have trouble shifting into second gear. The engine will rev, car goes nowhere until the tranny finally grabs a hard gear and the car moves on.
The previous owner took the car to a indy Volvo shop. The notes on the paperwork state”scan transmission control module for errors, no error codes found related to transmission. Performed trans drain and fill. Reset transmission shift adaptation – still has issue. Could not check TCM software due to VIDA not being accessible due to Volvo maintenance. Tech noted unrelated MAF malfunction and replace said MAF with new unit” Prior owner received and paid a $800 invoice.
I’m not 100% sure what this means? I called the shop that performed the work. The service writer was having a hard time explaining exactly what was on the invoice and the mechanic who performed the work was out for the day. Basically service writer said that the trans would eventually need replacement and that their shop only uses Volvo transmissions (I assumed new or reman direct from Volvo). Estimated cost 5k to 6K. In my opinion that’s not a wise investment for a 2006 vehicle.
At this point I have financially little into the car. I’m trying to decide is this worth fixing it or should I dump the car? I have access to professionally outfitted garage space with tools and a lift. I’ve watched the s60 transmission solenoid video here on this site. I’m wondering if that’s my issue as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I assume it's the Aisin 5 speed transmission?

You probably need to replace this
and this

the solenoids are readily available off ebay for about $200 all three of them. they need adjusted the way the old ones were.

5-6k to replace with a used transmission it's insulting, unless they are talking a fully opened and refurbished one, which indeed is not worth the investment.

Replace the whole valve body, with the one rebuilt with Sonnax kit. VB is a wear item.

I personally didn't have any good experience with $200 solenoids.

With all the work to get access I'm guessing the full rebuilt valve body maybe the more cost effective long term solution vs doing the job twice.

I assume the valve body comes complete with the solenoids?

Is the B4 servo piston part of the valve body? And is it a issue on a 2006 xc70?

In the second video posted above by Oragex (thank you for the video links) states the B4 servo piston can be an issue up to 2005. Mine is a 2006. Thoughts?

I really appreciate all the help.

Valve body comes with solenoids and it is tested on the bench. Just replacing the solenoids is a blind work: you can't know if it fixed the problem until the job is finished. May work, may not. Didn't work for me.

B4 servo cap shouldn't be a problem on your car. It's a part of transmission casing, not VB.

Thank you so much.

I'd rather spend the extra$ than do the job twice.

Any suggestions on a good place to purchase the VB?

Straight from Sonnax?
