My 2004 S80 T6 did not have platinum plugs from the factory and it has 2 turbos. I was shown the plugs when removed by Osteen Volvo Service. The plug had a standard looking electrode like the old Buick plugs looked like. The Volvo plugs looked the same the second changing. Also my 2004 has a change mileage of 60K not 100K like platinum plugs. Why would Volvo be changing long life plugs early? I think you have been given misinformation from your aftermarket parts store. Your owners manual will give you the correct part number from the factory, try to cross reference that number to verify the correct plug type. It seems to me a name like iridium was used, not copper, not platinum.

The correct Volvo part number is in your owners manual. I have seen all removed plugs from all Volvo cars I have owned but the 850 which locked up less than a year old and the S90 which was a total at three weeks old. None had platinum plugs and the V70 GT had the high pressure turbo. Here is a picture of the plug number for 2004 S80 2.9 and T6 from my manual. Look in yours and then cross reference the number rather than trust a non Volvo retailer. June

I've been using NGK single electrode copper cores (NOT the ones with the little needle point center electrode) in both our our 2.5 turbo and 2.4 NA. About $2.00 a pop, so of course the parts houses don't want to sell them - I always have to order them. So far WAY OVER 50,000 miles on each set without skipping a beat.

What factory retailer? My information is from the FSM like I originally stated. The FSM stands for factory service manual and platinum plugs electrodes don't really look much different than copper. I think your talking about Splitfire spark plugs or plugs that have multiple ground electrodes. Your owners manual isn't specifically for the S80 T6 model, it also applies to the N/A models. I'm pretty sure the S80 T6 is a 2.9L V6 engine and the factory Volvo plugs are platinum. The non-turbo Volvo's don't use platinum plugs and the Volvo plugs are Bosch plugs. This is the information that I'm getting from the FSM, this is why I started this thread. Copper conducts electricity better than platinum and is usually better in high performance vehicles but erodes faster. Check out this thread "spark plugs: copper vs iridium vs platinum ff#32".

Just to satisfy my own curiosity I called my Volvo dealer and asked what type of plug ie platinum, copper, etc original equipment plugs are. I was told Volvo does not use platinum plugs in the modular engines but they are basically copper plugs branded by Volvo for Volvo Service replacement. In this car I have seen two sets, the factory that came out and the first service replacement set. I always ask to see the old plugs to see the color and condition which I was taught tells if a cylinder is not right. Both sets of platinum plugs I have seen are clearly different looking at the electrode than a standard plug. Once in dad's Buick and a set out of my sister's 2007 Chevrolet Impala when it was 100K old. If you really want to know call your local Volvo dealer parts department, that is who I was referring to in my previous post because your dealership is Volvo's retailer. June

Abscate, I believe those NGK copper cores are BPR6ES. I'm not near my pile of car parts receipts at the moment.

The Bosch FR7DPP double platinum plugs are single electrode, the "double" platinum doesn't stand for double electrode.
Right. The last plugs I put in were Bosch Platinum (according to the packaging) and they had various codes on the packaging and on the plug itself. On the packaging, they were 18-2988-8 and 6730. Stamped on the plug itself is FR7DPP30T.

I need to make a correction to that NGK p/n. I looked through my old receipts and found that on both our turbo and NA cars I used BKR6ES, not BPR6ES. So far they've been in the cars for 84,000 and 75,000 miles respectively. (I was shocked.) I don't know if there is any significant difference between "P" and "K" - same heat range. The chain store cataloging says "K" is the correct one.

They no longer make that Champion Spark Plug but it was a double platinum plugs and now Bosch makes the factory plug.
