2001 V70 T5 Gentronic to Non Gentronic swap

Post by burkster88 »

I found your forum after I had purchased a 2001 V70 T5 auto-stick. Beautiful car but the transmission is gone. I know from reading the forums that only 2001 and 2002 transmissions work with this vehicle. My question is will a transmission without geartronic work in my car? If so, are the any special requirements to make this happen?

It's probably a pig in a poke on a 2001 since starting in 1999 all the major components talk to each other,,unlike earlier

Look up,top, for the sticky thread on 2001 transmissions and investigate valve body replacement.

We connected the car to the system and the solenoids positions were all correct. We did hear a whining sound coming from the transmission, which the technician said was the pump. I'm thinking replace the transmission all together. My options are already narrow with only a 2001 or 2002 but it would be even worse to if I can only install a transmission that has Geartronic (auto-stick) with turbo. I can tell you without doubt that I will NEVER use that function. I just found an 01 transmission without Geartronic. Will it work for the car? is there a difference in the 2001 transmissions for turbo vs. non-turbo? All assistance is greatly appreciated.

This is just a guess but it would seem likely that the Trans Control Module (TCM) has to be correct for whatever model transmission you have. But swapping the TCM might be dicey if it needs to handshake with the rest of the car - reprogramming?? I could see this project becoming a monster.

The transmission is not different GT vs non-GT. The gear lever assy, the shifter top cover, and TCM software is the difference. When you pull the lever to the GT gate you disconnect lever from shift cable and the top cover (gear selector module) has sensors that sense lever in gate and fore and aft. The sensors tell TCM what you requested and TCm does what it always does, control solenoids to give you the gear ratio

Thanks Jimmy57. Are you saying I can install the non-GT transmission, keep my current setup (shifter, cover) , update the TCM because of the swap and I should be fine?
