Repetitive popping sound in transfercase?

Post by Chaseoz34 »

I recently bought a 2000 v70xc...today the transmission or transfer case (idk) was whining (very r/c car like) during deceleration and on the freeway it made a large pop then the consecutive popping began, I feel like the epicenter is right under the driver seat . I removed the drive shaft to begin the troubleshooting and now although the sound is not at bad it is still popping and it is a bit rough going into reverse. Please help Volvo world

What do the fluids you've checked look like? Any idea of the previous service history - or lack of... ?

Being under it today showed a good amount of dark oil residue coming from the transfer case possibly the rear main seal I'm not sure but coming from the driver side. No record of transmission service. Engine fluids look golden and timing belt/WP done 10k ago.

Probably the angle gear/transfer case has a failed drive sleeve between it and the transmission. It may have gone far enough to damage the angle gear to.

You will need to pull the angle gear housing to verify this.

I'd remove the angle gear and drive for a while with it out and see if that kills the noise (I've been doing this for 7 years). See my method for retaining the angle gear sleeve in this thread, first page: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=79549&p=428967#top

Is your car a 4 speed auto or 5 speed? I think it is a 4 speed auto?

Do you know which trans it is? I believe it should be an AW40-42LE (sleeve part # 9181408) but you may have a AW55-50SN (sleeve part # 9495034).

Volvo lists the first part number a Discontinued. My version of Vida is older so maybe check if the part # has been superseded? The second one is still listed as available

The part # you listed is only for a manual trans in a P80 AWD up to 2000, but I read a thread which was not clear. It was for a 98 V70AWD but did not say if manual or auto. The owner bought the number you listed so maybe it is the new part #?

Check out this thread:
