Used prices are high right now, new car sales only recently picked up again, the low sales years '08+ are missing in the newer used market which trickles down to the older model years.
I've been looking @ early 2000's V70 & Passat awd in '09 & they were amazingly cheap then & haven't dropped much since, my gf's '04 Mazda 6 is still trading close to what she paid @ auction in late '08.

Good for the sellers though :).
I actually looked at getting a used Toyota - 06-07 models still go for $12-13,000 easily.

A brand-new 2012 was $19,000.

Thanks, cash for clunkers.

I read a lot of for sale ads it is rare for a well-running car to be listed under 1500. I think this kind of vehicle has a niche, like for high school or college kids.

Tell the buyer the truth the whole truth: they are very safe cars and need maintenance but will run forever. I would expect the buyer is out there will pay $1,000 for it for sure, maybe more. Ask $1400 be prepared to take $1k. Maybe you'll get $1400.

What I don't understand is there are a ton of old ill-maintained Volvos in my area but sellers seem to be getting on the upper end of the price range for them. $1500-$2000 is pretty typical. This is frustrating because I know what need to be done to make them run.

My aunt has a 95 with 85,000 on it. Dealer maintained every 5k. Garaged at home and at work. Thing is mint. She is a VP at a "large bank in America *cough cough*" and drives an 18 year old car...can't bring herself to get rid of it. She says when she takes it into the dealer techs offer to buy it.

Exactly - I see so many rough Volvos listed for $2000, and apparently they sell. I wouldn't touch them for that price.

If you have a decent car, put it up for sale. Someone will find it and be happy.

I just so happened to search "s70 worth" and this was the first thread posted. I purchased a 99 s70 with 120k miles in January clueless about the in-s and out-s with these rides. I tend to agree with Robert when it comes to value and this is for any vehicle, not just Volvo.

It's simple: car doesn't run, 500 is max.

Since the s70 I purchased has low mileage, no leaks, etc., I was willing to bite the bullet in the short term by investing a few more racks to ensure a dependable car. I plan on keeping, while at the same time, hone in on improving mechanical aptitude and skills.

On a different note, coming across this friendly and helpful website only made me want to do so more.

That $500 is spot on.

These cars are so forgiving. I agree, I've been able to develop a lot of skills with it and with the wealth of knowledge here. How these cars are priced sometimes is really mind-boggling though. I know Platinums, Turbos, Rs, and T5s should command a premium. But there are folk around here who want $3K for an N/A. It's kind of ridiculous. I think $1500 is a fair price for a P80 in tip top shape. These are 20 yr-old cars... But then again, what these cars are worth, what folks are willing to pay and what the insurance companies value these cars at is a little all over the place. Ours is Stage 0 but the KBB value of it is $700.

I had scheduled my "kerflunk" chasing for this Sunday but have to go see the tax man instead! If it's the sway bar, I'm going to be livid. Gonna have to try to squeeze it in on Saturday or wait another week.

Come to Toronto area, people give away old cars and with the Volvos you don't have to worry about rust. People lease or buy new cars here so you can get a S70 T5 with less than 300,000km (186,000 miles) for around $1000.
