I've read these are among the very best, only they wear quite fast, and will melt if kept in warm weather. Goodyear, Michelin are also good choices depending on price paid. I'd just be careful not to get an 'Ice' tire with closer threads (Michelin has a few of these), these are not so good on snow.

I have and had Toyo Observe GO2, these were perhaps the best balance of price/ice&snow traction/wear, unfortunately it seems Toyo replaced this model with a less performing tire.

YOKOHAMA ICE GUARD IG52C also?

We get a lot of snow here but there are maybe 5 major storms per year, very cold most of the time but you need to keep the tires on in April due to mud but it can be very dry on the roads and still very warm. That would be the month they get the highest wear I imagine.

If you look at the threads, they are somehow more spaced, but they are really not deep enough. Not a good tire for deep snow and even less in 'slush' wet snow. Try this site and Sort by customer ratings

But do you think it's more of an ice tire than snow? We don't get much slush in the highway, they are cleared quickly.

It looks like a combination of the two. Perhaps more for ice given the treads are quite large. Surely a good tire on dry/icy roads, less good in deep snow or any wet snow deeper than 1"

For the last 10 years, I have been using Firestone "Winterforce", very good winter tires for the money.

Among entry price category of decent performance winter tires, the Winter Force is a good choice if not that efficient on ice. People also seem to say good things about the Nexen Winspike korean tire, perhaps another inexpensive yet acceptable option. In the same price category, I've also had General Altimax on two different cars, sedan and SUV, and on both this tire was mediocre. Just to say that not everything that looks like a winter tire also performs good enough.

.
More space between the treads, treads are also deeper, better for deep snow
