I bought a VW yesterday

Post by matthew1 »

A Golf Alltrack, new off the lot. Don't worry, MVS isn't going anywhere.

Why not a Volvo? Cost. Volvo doesn't offer anything in the $24k ballpark, and not a manual transmission is to be found on their lots. I'd love nothing more than a new XC90 or V90 Cross Country or simply a V90 AWD, despite their auto transmissions. But at double the price I paid for this VW, it's just a dream.

Why not used? I absolutely looked for P3 wagons, on Craigslist and at Rickenbaugh Volvo near my house here in Denver. The problem there was scarcity. And that cascades into cost, since rare stuff is by nature more expensive. For the same $24k, I was looking at 5-year-old XC70s with 50-100k miles. To be honest, it was hard to swallow that pill.

So I got a new car, and it checks all the boxes:
  • wagon
  • manual transmission
  • turbo (for future tuning)
  • AWD for taking my son camping/skiing
  • in my price range
I traded in my 850. It was in average condition for an 850. I didn't want to do this, but the fuel pump went out at the VW dealer lot on Monday night when I was looking around the showroom. My son and I got in the 850 to take him to baseball practice and it turned over and sputtered and died. Repeat 10x. I started checking the usual suspects, hoses, spark plug wires, MAF connection, etc. Then the fuel rail -- at first some pressure, then none. Checked fuse #2 for fuel pump, it's ok. Swapped in known good 15A fuse just to be sure. No change.

I didn't want to trade her. I wanted to take her off the road after I'd found a car, give her some R&R or part her out.

It was the first and only time in 17 years of owning my beloved 1997 850 T-5 that it left me somewhere. The universe was telling me something.

I doubt I'll ever have a car as long as 17 years again. She pulled her weight, and then some (and some more, and more after that). I have sentimental attachment to that car, and it was hard to let go. I have mixed emotions today.

But onward and upward. Things change, life changes. I'll have fodder to write about on my VW site now, so if you want to follow life with a 2017 Alltrack, you'll find my thoughts there. That URL is https://www.matthewsvwsite.com/

Congrats on your new VW Golf Alltrac! Hopefully it will provide many years of good service and pleasure for you and your family!

I was close to buying a VW Jetta Wagon TDI two years ago, but then the emissions scandal broke loose and I backed off. Then I found my 05' V70 with 5-speed manual, and I'm really glad I did.

I know how painful separating after such a long time can be. My first car here in the States was a 68' Lincoln Continental which I kept for 19 years. Lot's of memories, we even drove it on our wedding day! That was hard, but I'm over it now.
And I still own a 79' Ford Capri which I brought with me from Germany. That one I bought 31 years ago and it will probably be passed on to someone in the family, I can't really see me ever selling it.

13' Honda Odyssey
84' Mercedes 300 D, gold/ tan, 420k miles (retirement project :D )

Good luck with your new car! Sounds like the 850 got mad at the thought of being left at a VW dealer and gave a good try at sabotaging the trade. Best wishes, June

Thanks for your thoughts, Dirk and June. Giving up the 850 is like losing a pet. There's a hole in my heart.

This VW is my first new car, and for a car guy in his mid-40s, I've dreamed of the day I'd buy a new car... for decades.

I was looking at a Golf before I got my Volvo. Oddly enough it was my wife who gave me the push to buy the Volvo over a VW cause she owned a 88 240 for years and by the time she got rid of it, it had close to 400,000 miles on it. Congrats on new wheels though!
