Fuel pump firstly becomes very noisy before it eventually dies.
If it's quiet i wouldn't worry about it,especially if jumping a fuel pump relay makes problem go away.

OK, it doesn't seem unusually noisy. I have a good 103 red relay from my 850 (purchased while throwing parts at another problem). Is it OK to try that 103 in the S70? They seem to be interchangeable according to FCP's parts catalog.

The 103 relay out of the 850 should be just fine. They should all be the same relay.

Volvo kept using the same fuel pump relay well beyond the 850 - throughout all P80 cars, then on into several of the post-00 vehicles.

I've had two P80 fuel pumps fail and they never made any noise. They failed abruptly and without warning. I don't think "becomes very noisy" is by any means typical.

Thanks erikv11. I'm going to drive the car a few days like cn90 suggested with 15-87 jumpered to watch for any hiccups.

The Bosch pump insert came today and looks genuine. At 229k, do you suggest I go ahead and install it even if this turns out to be the relay? We are going to be making some trips in this car this summer.

229k on a factory pump seems impressive. If the car is going on some trips where failure would be a big hassle then I would do that swap, yes. Make sure the rubber check valve seems to be intact still, when you swap the fuel pump insert.

dosbricks,

- Just drive the car a few days with the jumper wire in place.

- The fuel pump: if you only drive locally then I'd leave it alone for now. Just leave the new fuel pump in the trunk just in case.
If you drive long distance, then again carry the fuel pump in the trunk.
It is a toss-up.

- Now, if you decide to replace it (which I think is a good idea anyway), save the old fuel pump in a ZipLoc bag and store it in the trunk for emergency use. New pump can fail too.

- Re fitment: apparently the Bosch 69693 is the real deal, but from my reading of forum, user "stephansvolvo" (search for his posts) had to remove the black casing of the new pump to fit. As you know you need to make sure the polarity is correct. Make note, photos. Also most people say use a new fuel hose (I think it is 8-mm type).

- I replaced the fuel pump cover rubber seal and posted some info, hope you find this DIY helpful:
