For what its worth, you might want to check out a V50 which they made up to 2011.
This comes in FWD or AWD with either 5 cylinder Turbo or naturally aspirated.
Both versions are very reliable.

I like the V50/S40 and nearly bought one once but it fell through as the car had financing still on it. They don't fit my need as I need something much bigger, think bigger than an XC90. Yukon/Tahoe/Acadia sized vehicle. The other problem with a V50 is my size. I feel like a 6ft 2in clown in there!

Hopefully not going to offend anyone, but I believe the V50/S40 are not really true Volvo cars. They have quite more problems than the S60/V70. It appears the components on these cheaper cars don't have the quality found in the S60/V70 series. I'm also 6'1 and I could rub my chin with my knees behind the wheel.

The V8 has a wonderful driveability to it. Reliability post-counterbalance shaft problem (after certain serial #s in 2006 production) was all in all pretty solid. The Denso starters can have eventual issues leading to that inordinate draw. There are rebuilt units listed by many, however getting your hands on one is needle-in-a-haystack-esque. The same can be said for the PS pump. And, unfortunately both are exorbitantly priced OEM products and both are PITA replacement projects (read: outlandishly expensive by the dealer). Example - the intake manifold (upper) must be removed to do the PS pump. That starter? Get yourself some medication for your nervous system, some liquid skin Band-Aid product, because one will need both by the time accomplished. Heck, in hindsight - just remove the intake manifold for that one too! Nasty. The kind of nasty that makes one want to voice their 'feedback' to the engineer responsible.
Great motor, shoe-horned in. LOW production numbers = poor availability (if any) on what few aftermarket parts might be available. I've still got mine, but honestly would recommend that most go a different route. So probably not too bad a decision Neil!
