My son took our 2012 CPO S60 in for oil change prior to us selling it. Dealer informed him that if he stuck with the standard oil change that it would void the CPO warranty. Car has always been dealer maintained, and is under the 12 month/7500 mile limitation for next oil change. Adviser said Volvo was issuing a "recall" and that we should be getting information in the mail soon?
I told them to hold off on doing the oil change as I want to talk to VNA. I will call VNA on Monday as their call hours are M-Friday.
True? We will see.
Dealer wanting to make a bit more $$$$? We will see?
If it is any type of "recall" (word adviser used) then Volvo should supplement the difference in cost if they are now "requiring" synthetic. Price difference is $40 for standard and $90 for synthetic.
I will update when I have more information.

Spoke to Volvo NA and yes that is the case. Synthetic is required and no they will not discount that service. Synthetic not used, CPO warranty could be void.
Campaign came out in early 2016.

You want to use conventional oil in turbo engine prone to PCV problems in Texas temperatures?
Really, change oil yourself: 6 quarts of supermegaboutiqie Amsoil Signature + MANN (OEM) filter is about $52 or so. Mobil1 is even cheaper.

Yes, you need to switch. Just see this thread.

You can find tons of threads on multiple forums if you just look (or just Google "Volvo 2012 s60 oil burning", or just replace burning with guzzling). Major problems with this engine. If you need to get Goodwill assistance, you need to stick with this oil from here on out. Even people who did everything Volvo has asked are being told their are SOL. It's really a case by case basis.
As for me, I got a new engine from Volvo after working it out with VCNA. I had to fight like hell and was without my car for almost 3 months. It sucked but they did the right thing in the end. Look at TJ29871. It's a technical journal. You can find a link to the thread I pasted to actually view the PDF copy of it.
Good Luck!

Not sure if that is concerning Volvo, but Audi and BMW about 2008+ had a poorly designed PCV valve (even worst that the old Volvo one). The car would suddenly start consuming lots of oil (up to 1qt/400 miles) at around 20000-40000 miles and if not fixed quickly, it would take the rings and pistons. Audi was very prompt to replace the PCV with new design to all customers who had an oil consumption, or depending on the damage they replaced the pistons free of charge (yes Mr. managers at Volvo headquarters, indeed Audi is taking full responsibility without hassling their customers). It seems the faulty PCV design (maybe from Bosch?) was sold to several european car makers.
The reason for using synthetic oil would be for this specific PCV system in my opinion.

Mobil 1 is no longer ACEA A5/B5 rated. I think only Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Platinum meet this requirement.vtl wrote:You want to use conventional oil in turbo engine prone to PCV problems in Texas temperatures?

Then again, if you are out of warranty and don't care about trying to get Goodwill assistance later on, the Mobil 1 you can get right now at Wal-Mart (5 quarts) for around $12 after rebate.

2012 Volvo S60 T5, 60,543 miles on odometer; have to add 1qt of oil at 2100 miles from last oil change. Appears I may have the excessive oil burning issue; exhaust pipes have heavy soot buildup where exhaust comes out.
Does anyone know if the oil consumption gets worse as the car ages/miles build up on odometer; I can live with the 1 qt every 2100 miles, but don't want to think about adding quart every 1000 miles or less.
thank you.

It will continue to get worse until the engine goes. You're engine will be wrecked if it already isn't. Take it to Volvo and have them perform an oil consumption test. You might be able to get VCNA to help with Goodwill Assistance. Good Luck. The longer you wait, the more they won't want to help you. Take it ASAP.

Read the above post about Audi and Bmw. The poorly designed PCV box will cause the piston rings to fail. Try replacing the PCV immediately, and see how it goes from there.

If the Consumer purchased the vehicle with the intention of using conventional like Volvo recommended and now the Volvo updated warranty requires the consumer to use full synthetic or it will void the warranty then Volvo should cover the difference in maintenance expenses. Said consumer purchased the vehicle based on the information given at time of purchase not at the time of the recall on oil requirement update. Personally I'd use full synthetic in a 2012 S60 T5, especially a forced induction motor. Regardless I think the manufacturer should pony up the cost difference.
