2002 v70 PCV: Intake manifold and hard fuel line

I'm a noob here but I've just bought a 2002 V70 XC (already have a 2000 V70 XC) in very good cosmetic and running condition and am working to bring it to minimum operating standard from the beginning.

I did the cam seals, timing belt, and related last weekend, so this week it's time to do the PCV. Somewhat familiar with the job on other models, but the 2002 has me a bit stuck—I'm about 3 hours into it and still trying to get the manifold off.

The last bit that has me stuck is the hard fuel line that runs from somewhere near the block under the manifold, through the manifold, and up into an L-shaped bend. The fuel rail is off and the line was disconnected from the rail half of the hard line using the proper tool.

However, the "L" shaped bend in the fuel line is preventing me from getting the manifold off, as it's shaped so that it won't fit through the hole in the manifold. I'm hesitant to try to bent it, and it doesn't look like I want to try to remove the line by disconnecting the side under the manifold.

Is there a trick to getting the manifold off past this fuel line L bend on the 2002 model, or do I need to grit my teeth, grimace, and try to bend this line a bit straighter, then bend it back again afterward? (Both halves of the line—manifold side as well—are hard steel tubing—so it would have to be bent back into an 'L' again to re-mate the two halves of the line afterward). Any help would be appreciated.

I'd be careful, I read about someone who bent it too much then had fuel leaking. Maybe post a pic will get more answers.

Thanks for the tip. I decided more or less what you said—I didn't want to bend the tube. It took a while but I finally figured out just the right set of angles and movements to work the manifold up, around, and off without bending the tube.

Got the job done and the PCV system is now clear. I very much hope I do not have to do anything like that again anytime soon.

I had an engineer tell me that I couldn't remove a door handle without first removing many other things the other day...

I looked at the machine for a minute or so and then proceeded to twist and turn the handle until, a few seconds later, it was free. Nothing else removed. This handle has multiple complex bends and wraps about 3/4 of the way around the unit. There are pipes, hoses and linkages blocking it in. It was no quick process normally.

I handed him the handle and said, as I walked away... Now you put it back on!

You can bend that line with impunity - its heavy wall and won't kink or break too easily. If you make bends around a large diameter pipe, you will be fine.

A slight bend is all that is needed to reduce the contortion act to a couple of steps

Well done! And now s/he has to put it back to recover a mere second place in engineering ability, you having secured first firmly.

yep i said a few swear words doing mine, my mistake was not removing the two bolts that hold the injectors.
