1998 v70 will not turn over

Post by Dingo957 »

I just put a newer engine into my volvo and thought i had all of the wires plugged up. When ever you try to start the car you do not get a starter tick you just get the fuel pump priming. What could i have missed or not done. Have also tried two different batteries and neither made a difference the dash lights come on when trying to start it but only sound made is from the fuel pump

Double check that the starter wires are hooked up correctly. The battery cable and the alternator cable both go to the large lug on the starter solenoid and then the green/red (usually) wire goes to the small terminal on the solenoid.

Beyond that check to see if you are voltage to the PNP switch. That is easily checked at the service stater connection in the small kidney shaped fuse box under the hood. You should have battery voltage on the terminal when the key is in position III. If you have voltage there but not at the starter solenoid then the problem is with the PNP switch.

Make sure the ground wires are connected to the engine and transmission. Also, make sure the reverse lights are on when the gear selector is in reverse.

ok so with the gear selector in reverse the reverse lights do come on. I have tried the fix of rocking the shifter back and forth from p to l with no change and no start. I am 99% sure all of the grounding wires are connected to the engine and trans. Where would one i may have missed be?

There is a know issue of the transmission not properly grounding to the engine good enough to start the car. This is common when someone installs an engine or transmission that has by lying around somewhere. They fail to clean the matting surfaces good and they get a no crank situation.

Here are a few fixes I have seen:
1. Take the engine back out and clean the surfaces good. Re-install and fire it up.
2. Run additional ground wires from the transmission to the chassis and from the engine head to chassis, then fire it up.

Also, make sure the alarm is not triggered stopping the car from cranking. Cycle the key in the door with all doors and hatches closed.
