First S40/ VVT timing belt service questions

Post by drucken68 »

Hello,
I have my first VVT unit ongoing now for a timing belt/water pump, vvt etc. I have done many other 5 and 6 cyl white block timing jobs without issue, The car I bought was making a nasty noise in the top end right after start up, but quieted nicely to a normal idle. The car is in pretty decent shape and it was a cheap project, well so far. I have purchased the VVT pulley ( intake is the only one with VVT on this model) Solenoid, all the timing belt parts etc. My question is that when I have watched some good tutorials on the VVT, the unit appears to have maybe 3 or so teeth of movement to the limit position, then it springs back. Neither the one I removed or the INA one I have purchased have more than 2mm or so of movement. I understand some units did not spring back and had to be moved manually, but is it normal to move so little? I was under the impression that they all had similar movement. I currently have the old parts disassembled with cam/crank locks in place as I figured I would try to confirm this before reinstalling. Thanks in advance!!!!!!
