Stalling 2001 V70XC

Post by dtlayman »

New to the forum. It is great to have technology like this so we can figure out what is going on with our cars.

Approximately 30,000 miles ago and then again a few weeks ago our car stalled after driving several hours on the interstate during summer weather with lower fuel levels (under 1/4 tank). Car will be running fine and then all of the sudden the car rpms and the car is unresponsive to input from my foot. We end up coasting to side of road and unsuccessfully trying to start the car again for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes or so we start car succesfully and the car runs fine. No error codes. We are taking the car to our dealer Tuesday but we did this 30,000 miles ago and we took it to 2 dealers after this happened a few weeks ago when we were out of town.

Thought there might be someone who could help us diagnose.

Being a 2001 it could be the ETM (electronic throttle module). What comes to mind is that 30K miles ago, the dealer did a software upgrade that prolonged the life of the ETM, but now, 30K miles later, it is finally going. Good news is that Volvo has warranted these to 10 years or 200K miles.

That or maybe a fuel filter, as you mention this happens when the car is low on fuel....gunk in the tank could be clogging the filter. If it's never been changed, it could be a good thing to change out, especially if you are over 60K miles on your car.

Good luck!

I should have mentioned we have already had ETM replaced at 65,000 miles (now 105,000 miles) and the first time it stalled was after we had it replaced. I should have insisted that they look at the car more thoroughly the first time it stalled. When it stalls - high speed, summer heat, no codes is different than when we had ETM failure.

Fuel ? - What is interesting is that this doesn't occur around town with lower fuel levels and lower speeds and it hasn't occurred on previous long interstate trips the last couple of years.

Thanks for information ....

We are having the car serviced at the dealership where we purchased the car originally and they investigated that stalling issue. Couldn't find any codes except the catalytic converter code.

They said they monitored the fuel system with fuel gauge but nothing abnormal. Later today they said that based on discussion with reg tech rep that they thought it probably was either fuel pump pick up or fuel pump relay. They suggested replacing the fuel pump relay first since it is less expensive. Hope this works. They mentioned the fuel pump pick up was several hundred. Can anyone explain the fuel pump components on this car?

Also, did I see that there was a recall on the fuel pump on some Volvos?

When I called today they said the relay they are replacing is accessed behind the gas or brake pedals. I thought it was on the driver's side but in the engine compartment.

Also, I noticed while doing a search that there was a long stalling thread elsewhere. Did I break a forum rule by starting a new thread? Do I need to link these?

Why don't you just edit your 1st post?
Fuel pump retail is a $1300-$1400 job, part alone (pump) is about $700 and 5 hours labor.
I doubt it's a pump glitching out 30K miles apart!
