Hi,
I have a 2001 V70 XC, I got the car for $1300 this year cause she had a bad heat gasket. I was able to replace the head gasket, with some busted knuckles; she has since been my daily driver for a couple months.
A subtle knock coming from the middle of the car under load got worse and worse until it was grinding and making all sorts of awful noises. I had one of these cars before and I was able to swap out the entire driveshaft assembly including the carrier bearing in one afternoon. This car, no such luck. I got the 6 bolts out of each end and the bolts holding the carrier bearing but the axle won't budge, it seems rusted in place on both ends. I would think there is a bolt left to remove, but I know that isn't the case. I hit it with some penetrating oil but so far no luck.
Is there a trick to getting the driveshaft out?
Thanks,
drGian

He is referring to the driveshaft from angle gear to the viscous coupling. I have used a grinder and ground a groove (hold grinder still in one spot for a few secs to get a gouge of sorts) in three spots 120 degrees apart and then used a chisel and hammer and tapped, moved to next, tap, move to next, etc. and then it moves. I hold chisel, long chisel for front, at angle away from the flange. Not too hard but repetitive. Once it moves any detectable amount then give it another good dousing of penetrating oil spray.
this groove is on the driveshaft I assume, since that's getting thrown out? My only question there is that my driveshaft will turn, slightly anyway, so will whacking these grooves work or is it supposed to be such that it won't move.

I have ground those three spots and used them to tap the CV joint off the flanges and then re-installed the shaft with no ill effects. I have had many that the CV would turn a little relative to the flange but would not come out until tapped.
