1998 V70 SAS System Question

Post by Shamiks V70 »

By the code, the cause of the Check Engine Light appears to be a problem with the SAS system. I have replaced pumps over the years and cleared this problem up but when I looked into it this time, the pump is not destroyed by water, if I put power to it ,it works. Nothing appears to be wrong with the valve. I don't think the SAS air pump is coming on and the valve is probably stuck closed. I'm just looking for some suggestions on this . If I understand how this system works, when you start the car, a signal is sent from the onboard computer telling the switch to open the valve and I guess in turn run the SAS pump to blow air into the exhaust stream for something like 90 seconds to get everything moving faster. I'm not hearing the pump come on at all. Is there a relay or something I should look at. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, there is a relay.

Look up the SAS delete topic. This is what I did. Glad to be rid of the whole mess.....

Check the lines
I thought I was going to have to replace the pump or do the wiring trick.
Everything was working, a vacuum line was cracked, A $1 piece of tubing fixed it!
No more light

There's a relay (either down next to the air pump or on your 98 more likely up near the relay box) and then up near the shroud there is a solenoid.

I always advocate to delete the SAS, and direct people to this post http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/14 ... with-pics/.

I appreciate the replies. While I would love to delete the SAS, it is not an option. If it weren't for the emissions testing, I would do just that. I have to make it function- at least for now. I checked the vacuum lines and they are fine. Like I said, the pump comes on when power is applied, the valve is OK and the solenoid is good. There aren't too many parts in this system so I'm thinking relay. Is there a diagram somewhere showing the location of the relay? Thanks.

The wiring diagrams are on the web but we don't just them here, by agreement, With Volvo Legal. Sounds like the relay is the next thing to check.

Yes, you can. It fools the emissions test. Essentially it bypasses the system which only works on startup anyway

As stated, the whole point of the SAS delete is the ECU doesn't see any problems so never sets any emissions codes. SAS delete is so easy to do, just try it. Not sure of the procedures in your state but I don't think anyone in Maryland is failing emissions for doing it, I have only heard of that in CA where they inspect very carefully for all equipment on the underhood diagram. Of course you can get a new underhood sticker for that if you want to. Remember, about half the 98 cars came with SAS, and half came without. If you are really worried about failing do the delete procedure (it's quick! it's cheap!) but leave all the components in place.

See my post I mentioned to two possible relay locations, the relay you are looking for looks like this: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 70-9442932

Follow the power cord from the air pump it may plug right into the relay, that's how all of the 850s are anyway ...

Oh and if you end up wanting a cheap, used relay I'd be happy to send you one.

I appreciate that Eric - Lol . Apparently the relay is fine. I switched the system relay with the air pump relay and the car started just fine. Am I right that the air pump should come on regardless of the outside temperature? Since I did all of the switching around of parts yesterday, the light is off now. I wonder how many miles/ cycles I'll have to go before it kicks back on? I just don't get it....
