Torque Specs for ball joint

Hi guys,

I have replaced both ball joints on my XC70 2005, I have VIDA torque specs but I cannot find consistency between the tightening force table and the bolts I refer to.

Most likely this is due to the fact that I am not English mother tongue, however I need to be sure of what I am doing.

First question, the torque summary table in VIDA refers to strength class 8.8, how do I recognize the bolts that refer to that class, is there a number, a symbols on them?

Ball joints: I refer to the two bolts that attach the ball joint to the knuckle, but in the torque specs nothing is referring to the term "knuckle", so I do not know which one to choose?

How about the nut that fixes the ball joint to the control arm? Where do I find the torque strength for it?
Although I know I cannot use a socket, at least I want to have an idea on how much strength I should apply with the wrench while counterbalancing it.

Haynes says this,

Balljoint bolts 37ft lbs
Balljoint nut 40ft lb.
I use blue loctite on the 2 bolts,
the nut for the control arm/balljoint is a locknut on mine, it has a plastic insert.
If you watch youtube the mechanics just develop a feel for it.

You have to choose depending on the use of steel or aluminum control arms. Note that new fasteners are required, and this is important here. Angle torqued bolts are stretched when the are used so the should not be reused. If these come loose, life is not good.

That's exactly the table I refer to, so my difficulty in interpreting the terminology:

Balljoint bolts 37ft lbs = 50 Nm - does it mean that the line this refers to in the table is 'ball joint in control arm aluminum' ?
Balljoint nut 40ft lbs = 54 Nm - I do not see any reference to that nut in the table.

It looks like there are three different ball joint applications on this car.

Type 1 with the ball joint in spindle size M10
Type 2 ball joint in aluminum control arm size M12
Type 3 ball joint in steel control arm size M14

I think you have to sort out which one you have - maybe send a picture if you are stuck on this?

2 bolts hold the balljoint in the shock tube.
The nut threads onto the balljoint stud.
I do it by feel and am pretty sure I go more than the official torque, if I re-use fasteners I add a bit of blue loctite,
never had one come loose.

The balljoint stud passes thru the control arm, nothing threads into alum in any of this,
its a steel nut on a steel stud and mine have a locknut. (moog)

I thought the XC70 is a steel control arm.?
V70 is alum , it is on my V70 at least.

Well at least I know I am not the only one confused with those torques specs

Second, to make it clearer:



Those are the bolts and nut I refer to, to me, this is a ball joint attached to a knuckle, I do not see any clear reference to this in the VIDA table above, obviously I cannot find consistency in the terminology used in that table that leads me to conclude those are the bolts and nut they refer to.

I hope this clarifies what I am puzzled with.

Can you measure the bolt head (what wrench) or remove and measure the shaft diameter?

Me,Im guessing 18mm or 19mm wrench.



That will tell is which torque to use..
