It looks like it was very loose, and they ran it, for a while. Then it started giving "Cam Sensor" error codes, and stopped running. Whoever worked on it rectified their mistake by torqueing it to such a high value, it took 200# on a 5' cheater bar to get it off. That might have worked if they had got it aligned properly, but they didn't.

I have a new gear on order, and I'll put it in and see how the compression is looking then. (Yes, I do the compression test with a full battery, plus a 50A "helper", plugs out, throttle wide open.) Previously I've got 95 psi on all of them, which sounds more like a "cam out of timing" than bent valves, I hope. I think I was very lucky that the gear wore badly, but the crankshaft itself seems to be relatively undamaged.

I put a video on youtube showing the gear and the play.

Great video Roger, nice and clear and good lighting.

That is a nasty play in the crank pulley, but I'm wondering how this gets loose?

Someone made a mess of that, didn't use a crank lock tool, used original fastener, no torque wrench, maybe relied on a rattle gun,
the list could include more. I got away with doing all that on my non interference 740 and the bolt never came loose.
Did you take a look at the pistons?

I put on the new crank pulley tonight, and I think I got really lucky. The compression has come up from 95 across the board to 175-182 on all 5 cylinders, and with all the cranking I did with the compression test, I did not get the "cam sensor" ECM code once. Hooray! With compression like that, I think I have no bent valves, and that all the dings in the top of the pistons were not hard enough hits to damage the valves. I'll work on getting it all back together, then see if it will start and run. :D

It runs! Hooray!

Although I also figured out that the alternator appears to be dead. The red light stays on, and the DIM gives a message that the Electrical System Requires Service. And the voltage doesn't come up, the car runs off the battery and the voltage drops down towards 11V.

Chances are that either the PO or I managed to wreck the diodes with the "50A Start" battery charger. Ah well, now to fix that.

But it runs! Hooray!

Nice, well done.

The ignition coils often get torched after a jump boost so keep a spare and watch for misfire codes , P030x
