Pass. compartment blower fuse (#31) keeps blowing, 1999 V70

I have a 1999 V70, no turbo, automatic transmission.

Fuse 31 blows every time we switch the heater blower to high. We checked with a volt meter, and the climate control panel blower switch sends power to the blower motor only on setting 5 (high).

No power goes to blower on settings 1 to 4. Fuse 5 and all others are OK. Climate control panel does not show any burned spots.

We've recharged the A/C system, now looking to:
1. replace heater blower motor
2. Climate control panel

I appreciate any ideas on how to proceed.

Do you have an electronic climate control unit or a manual unit? From the sounds of things yours is manual unit but on an 850 it only goes from speeds 1 to 4.

If you have a manual unit the blower motor is pretty much for sure shorted out and is bad. The reason you aren't getting power on the lower speeds is that the blower motor resistor also burned out when the blower shorted out.

To make sure the blower is bad and it is not a short in the wiring unplug the power connector to the blower motor, replace fuse 31, turn the speed back to 5 and see if the fuse blows again. If it does not blow the fuse it will prove that the blower motor is toast.
