2004 xc90 2.5t oil leak

Post by huzzsaba »

My 2004 xc90 2.5t has developed a small oil leak towards the right side of the engine right around the crankshaft area.

I replaced the pcv last year and there is no signs of increased pressure. There is no smoke coming out the dipstick hole. The engine runs very nice with no issues. the car now has approx. 280,000kms on it which is approx. 175,000 miles.

Is the seal under the crank pulley the rear main seal or the front main seal?

I don't have any plans to repair the leak in the immediate future because I know it will cost quite a bit, and I know from searching that you can run it like that for a while.

meanwhile I searched and found that there are some oils like Valvoline maxlife and Castrol gtx high mileage that can help stop oil leaks.

I have been using Castrol syntec (full synthetic) 5w30 oil since I bought it 2 years ago. Would switching to something like high mileage oil help? I am leaning towards Valvoline Maxlife because it comes in full synthetic as well and has great reviews.

Any help would be appreciated.

2 years later, I have the same symptoms. Did you come up with anything?

Same thing here - Noticed two successive leaks. One in an asphalt parking lot and then right afterwards on my garage floor. Took it in for an oil change and it has slowed WAY down to about one drop after the car sits for a few hours. Totally illogical progression from small leak to a drop if ever. I am thinking the filter housing and or gasket was loose..... ?
