The Tx county I live in is also strict. Never a problem since deleting it. I did leave the components in place.

I'm curious, where did you find the relay on your 98?

Usually a flaky SAS light is due to a leaky hose somewhere, like JRL said. But if the pump wasn't coming on, but now it is, that's a different story. I'd keep my eye on both the relay and the solenoid, if it starts acting up again. Typical behavior for failing electrical parts. Or install the diode so the ECU thinks the pump is on anyway. :D

I found the relay in the kidney shaped unit by the fuse box. I also found a blog post from somebody that had a diagram of the entire system and a description of where to find the relay and the test using the one next to it. So now I have run the car about 97 miles since yesterday and no CEL has come on....... yet. With the way my luck is, it's waiting for me to pull in to the emissions testing facility. The pump still isn't coming on as far as I can tell. By the way, where can you get the diode? All of our Radio Shacks are gone around here.

Yeah Radio Shack is gone from most markets, if I needed a diode today I would probably order it from mouser.com. The diode is about $0.20 there, but of course 5 bucks shipping. Maybe pick up a few radio and switch bulbs while you are at it. If only I had thought to get more diodes when I last bought them, so cheap and easy to mail out ...

I have a pair of the correct diodes you (or anyone) need(s). An extra in case the 1st soldering gets messed up :!:

$3.00 shipped

Basically pays for the stamps and a new thick padded envelope.
I don't need them anymore as we fixed the SAS system so they were not necessary!

A pair is a very good idea, I am not good with a soldering iron and I cooked one on my first install.

Well, I have the diodes but my friend (mechanic) thinks that I should do it right and track down the reason the system isn't working. I have found that the power isn't getting to the relay but I need to see a diagram from the relay back to figure this out. Any thoughts on where I can find that?
Thanks.

I don't mean to keep beating a dead horse but does anyone know where the relay for the SAS Pump gets its power? Is there a diagram we can look at to run this down? Thanks.

Since I didn't get any feedback on my question about the relay for the SAS pump, I did "the modification". I drove it around daily for over a week and over 100 miles and no CEL. I went in for the emission test and it failed. They said that the computer was bad - on the printout it reads : Diagnostic Trouble Codes 99999 - Too many OBD monitors are not ready on multiple attempts. I just realized that I didn't unplug the pump after making the modification but I'm not sure if that would cause this - any thoughts?

You have to check your OBD monitors for readiness. The engine, CAT, OXS should go ready quickly, the EVAP can take 100-2000 miles (2000 is extreme)

While you are driving that 100 miles, did you do any of the following:

Empty or full tank of gas?
AC on?
Exceed 60 mph?
Full throttle operation?

If so, your monitors won't reset. You basically have to "Miss Daisy Drive" to get the car ready for emissions testing
