Every so often (it seems more frequent now, but it may be because I'm listening for it) during the past year or so, a whir that approaches (as in the frequency of the sound increases) belt/tensioner squeal has been occurring.
The sound starts in the mid-30 mph range, and the frequency of the sound increases until it peaks at 40-43 mph. The sound quickly tapers off above that range. It is not loud (can - and probably is - drowned out by having the radio on) and goes away completely the next time I slow down to a stop.
The car can be cold or hot (more frequent when the engine is warm). I think in every case, the pavement has been dry.
The dealership wasn't able to repro it, so I was wondering if anyone here might know what the cause of this is.

Fits conditions for belt noise. How many miles?
When it is noisy can you hear it if you raise hood with engine running?
If yes, then belt noise can be temporarily eliminated by spraying belt with silicone spray lube. Silicone spray is not harmful to anything on the front of the engine but it will lube a belt that is noisy due to something splashed on it or due to belt wear that makes the belt not conform to pulleys. The belt can look perfect but when it wears the sides of the V ribs are no longer riding high with good grip in the pulley grooves and noise is the symptom. If silicone spray gives no relief then it is something else. The clutching alternator pulley is a possibility.
Before spraying anything pull dipstick and see if that stops noise. Crankcase vent system has a valve that can make the crankcase have too high vacuum and the seals can allow suction of air past them and kazoo type noise results.

The car has ~45k, and this started about 5k ago.
The sound only happens (or it least is greatly audible) when driving at 40-43 mph, so not easy to check under the hood at the time.
The sound happened again today. Road conditions were damp (which I don't think means anything) and happened along a stretch of road with a long, low incline (the same stretch that it has happened a majority of the other times that I've heard it.... which I also don't think means anything since it is on my way to work AND is the first stretch I can go above 40 mph).
If it becomes more consistent, then I'll give it a shot of silicone.
