'04 V70 Overheat (rad hose fail) - Cam cap shot off - Help?

Well, it's an unfortunate first post from a long-time lurker. My 2004 V70 is my third Volvo. Previously had a 2001 XC70 and before that a 1994 940 Turbo (miss that car).

As consolidated in the title, my V70 overheated today because the radiator hose (passenger side near right headlight) failed and dumped the coolant. As I was pulling into a parking lot after realizing what was going on. I hear a loud "pop-PING" just once. I parked, shut off and walked back where I drove in.

I also found a little bit of oil dribbling down the engine, source unclear and it also sprayed oil on the underside of the hood.

I kind of get where it's supposed to be but haven't located the exact spot, but it *seems* like it might go right underneath the upper engine mount.

I really appreciate any help anyone can offer. I've had trouble finding much information online on this specific topic, which concerns me, but it seems like it's just an odd scenario.

The bigger question is what CAUSED it to blow off. We know the radiator hose broke and the engine overheated. Did the head warp to the point that the combustion pressure passed into the crankcase and blew the plug out? I'd start with a compression test on all five jugs.

As above, I would do a compression (head gasket), a PCV test (Youtube), and a cooling system check.

The large hose may get softer and I've heard 1-2 of failing, but it's rare. You engine may run too hot for some reason. The original radiator is really good on this car. May as well replace the thermostat by now if original.

Not many of us have had mild overheat due to lost coolant on our Volvos. When this happens the crankcase pressures increase and a seal can pop out, or a dipstick pops up. If you stopped the engine in the early part of the overheat you should be fine.

I think that cap will be on the exhaust cam side under the mount as you suspect.

Well, thanks for everyone's replies. I'll have to consider those eventualities as well. I've been able to fill it up with coolant again and drive it without any issue after re-installing the cam cap.

I've determined that the coolant loss was not the hose, which I replaced, but a crack in the rad tank where the hose connects. Any tips on replacing the radiator? I haven't found much on this generation.

Without an intercooler in the mix it will be easier than a turbo car.

Not sure but I think it comes out at the bottom. A used unit should be fine, these last forever until the bumper kicks a curb in a parking spot.

Well, it's lasted a while and it's the plastic tank that cracked probably before now and it's got 130k on it. I ordered an inexpensive new one.

I put a Nissans in mine in 2013 and it failed again this year. Next one is on FCP though.
