2005 xc 90 front passenger brake locked up

Brand new to this site and I really need some HELP !! I can loosen bleeder and the caliper releases the hold on rotor{can pry the piston in with bleeder cracked open.. The caliper seems ok ?? The caliper moves on the pins good{left to right} I even changed out the rubber hose going to caliper as it looked s little rough, did NOT help the sticking ?? Any ideas ?? as soon as I hit the brakes front wheel locks up ?? Please help mt !!!!!!

Had almost the exact same problem with my '04 XC90 about a year ago, except mine was the driver side. You've done the correct troubleshooting so far, but now you need to keep working your way towards the brake master cylinder. The next thing in line is the ABS Brake Control Module. This is the bit that was broken for my car, and you might have the same issue. One of the valves was sticking and not releasing. Here's a very rough outline of what to do next:

On the brake control module, there are 4 brake lines that go to each corner of the car, and then 2 lines that go to the master cylinder. Start the car and push on the brakes so the front passenger "locks". Shut the car off. Find the line coming from your passenger brake caliper - one of the 4 along the bottom - (sorry, I don't remember what order they are in, but you can probably google it or trace the brake line) and crack it open. (put some paper towels underneath to catch brake fluid.) If the brake releases, then you can assume the caliper and line to the caliper are fine. Tighten the brake line back up.

Now you need to see if the brake module is the issue. Start car again and depress brakes, then shut car off. Now loosen one of the 2 lines that go to the master cylinder (again, sorry, don't remember which one is which). If the caliper loosens, then the problem is further up stream, presumably the master cylinder, and you should be able to find specifics on that type of repair elsewhere on this site. If it doesn't loosen, then the BCM package is the issue.

The BCM / ABS unit consists of 3 parts: BCM module, motor, and valves (aluminum block in between the other two items.) The valve block was my problem.

I initially sent the entire package to Xemodex for a rebuild, but they don't do anything with the valve block - just the control board and the motor - so it didn't fix my problem. I got a BCM package from a local junk yard, and swapped out the parts. The BCM circuit is programmed for your car, so you need to swap out the control board from the original package. You can get details on taking the module apart on the Google.

Are you getting any codes, as well? A bad BCM control board will also throw some codes. Also, I was told by multiple people that my problem with the valve sticking is rare, so this may not be your problem.

Sorry for the lack of specific details in the post, but the cracking of the brake lines on either side of the brake module should be enough to help troubleshoot further.

Joe.. Sir I can not say "THANK YOU" enough !!! THANK YOU ... I have been so stressed out on this problem.. I have spent many many hrs. trying to get some help . You are the only real help I have found . I can find no BCM unit from local bone yards. I can not even take my ride to get some one to get codes ? Still trying to find a diagram to find out which line goes to front caliper from BCM block, hard to trace thought I could find a diagram on the net. No lights {brake or ABS} has ever came on in dash ? again Joe Thank you thank you thank you !! really down about this as life has not been good for my family.. YW. I feel your pain; my car was off the road for about 4 weeks trying to fix my problem. Try following the brake line from the caliper to the BCM unit by hand. In a pinch, just loosen each line, one at a time.

NOTE: Remember to properly bleed the brake lines before putting the car back on the road!!

I rescue civil war history(metal detecting} [email protected] Well I traced the line going to caliper to ABS block and cracked it open just a little , caliper released... Then cracked the line from master cylinder to ABS block and still stayed locked up {got no fluid ??} I did not crank up ride though as just pumping brakes 1 or 2 times locks it out{the caliper} So now is it the block or the BCM ??

The video below was related to a different issue, I don't know if this will work for you, but maybe give it a try. Undo the booster pump switch, remove the brake reservoir cover, release the screw bleeder on the locked caliper, turn the ignition key to Pos II, then pump a few times with force and quickly the brake pedal - don't bring the pedal to the floor.

Sometimes the problem is in the rubber hose that goes to the caliper.
With time, the hose may swell on the INSIDE, acting as "one-way valve" ---> brake lock up.

The cheapest solution now is to replace both front brake hoses (they are due at this age/mileage anyway).
If this does not solve the problem, then move on the the ABS Module.

This is a cont. from 2005 xc90 front wheel locked up ..........!!Hey my Volvo buddies spend hrs. going through bone yards today as these places are poorly organized sometimes.. came up empty handed and found a big scarlet king snake in a trunk (did not harm him) My real question is I think my BMC is ok and also pretty sure my ABS pump is fine. What block(hydraulic} or ABS distribution block{not sure of correct name} can I use I see many xc70 ? that look just like the same part off my xc90 not sure if I can use them.. I really need some help here by someone smarter than me on Volvos ? I hope I described this well enough / If not I will explain in more detail.. I do have the DST button Traction control deal ? I have really had my butt cut on this ..
please some one help me. This stuff is so so high dollar and this is no show car but my disable wife's : only ride, need help !!
