Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)
Made my Volvo very jealous today... I bought a Saab. Needs a head gasket among other things, but it's in great shape for what I paid.

That's just a shaab in Volfs clothing
Last one I owned was a 1996 red convertible with 2.3 I think?
Loved it. 5 speed of course

Only thing this car doesn't have is the 5 speed. Otherwise, it's loaded. Sunroof, heated front seats, auto dimming mirror, homelink, and it's the Aero so it has the lower, firmer sports suspension and the 2.3 big turbo. I think it has the same 19t as the 2000 V70R, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
It even has a cooling glove box!

Hahaha, yeah our E39 has a GM 4 speed. It may be a GM Saab, but it still has a LITTLE Saab DNA left in the engine.
Correction, saw it today, it has a TD04HL-15t.

My XC got a shiny new alternator this weekend. This job was more involved than I thought initially. I took all the bracketry apart for the power steering pump which has a gazillion screws. That was quite the puzzle to put back together, only a Swedish engineer can come up with something like that. Everything is charging nicely again, next project is the leaky gas tank
and with the P2's in the background:

I love Saabs. The love affair starting when I worked as a valet in Long Island. My coworkers only ever joyrided in Saab turbos! I wouldn't get one (a 99 9-3, 4-cylinder, MT, with 120K on the clock and a blown turbo...) until twenty years later. Drove it home from Brooklyn with the previous owner's plates on it. Went through a quart of oil and blinded half the borough, but kept it easy, didn't boost a mm. Car was OK.
In my folks' driveway, I told them I was going to get it running. They'd seen my Volvo work so they were OK with it. Read up and viewed as many videos as I could on the turbo replacement. Volvo PCV, Timing Belt, suspension, work under my belt, decided to give it a go.
Broke a few exhaust manifold bolts. But I was luckily able to extract them without any issue. Was able to remove the turbo and separate everything in an afternoon. Was real careful to support the exhaust from the bottom carefully. Everything's going smooth. I've got pretty good tools.
But then... The "new" Chinese eBay turbo that I purchased for $100 or so won't fit for some reason. Thought it was my error so I took everything apart, moved things around, took apart more than you need to. But still, no dice. Couldn't get the turbo inlet or the turbo mountain bracket to line up.
Then it snowed, snowed some more. Then other things happened in life. And so the car sat for a winter and half a Spring. Six months later my mother starts to complain about the car. (Rightfully so!) And so I take everything apart again and I line up my old turbo next to the new turbo.
The machining is off by almost half a cm! The input that connects to the turbo inlet pipe protrudes too far--the inlet will not attach because of the block of the engine!!! No fanagling of bolts and mms found here or there worked.
All in all, the car should've been running in that first afternoon... Scrapper gave me $60 for it. About a month's worth of work foiled by a fault in machining was quite a lesson to learn.
Good luck with that Saab!!!

Thanks! Man, that sucks about the 9-3. A manual turbo one of those would be lots of fun too.theWIFES_S70 wrote: ↑24 Sep 2017, 19:19 I love Saabs. I've got my work cut out for me on this one. Part of the deal was the PO had all of the parts brand new in box from eEuroparts for the head gasket, new head bolts, valve cover gaskets, manifold gaskets, etc., so that makes every worlds easier for me. Plus it saves me money. Really, with all the parts, I only paid about $250 for the car.
Hopefully I don't run into any unexpected problems!

Yeah, you live and you learn! I still scour the NYC craigslist ads to see if another one like that pops up. I'd love to give one another go with a real $250 turbo. But then again, I think I'd find the same pleasure from a T5 manual!bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2017, 08:01 Thanks! Man, that sucks about the 9-3. A manual turbo one of those would be lots of fun too.

Just prepare, things break on Saabs... Make sure you have some high quality left-handed drill bits on hand just in case. (There's a small Irwin set on Amazon for And torque and oil those head bolts down correctly (they seem to come loose on these cars which is absolutely nuts...) https://www.amazon.com/IRWIN-HANSON-Spi ... e%2C+11119 This is what I used to remove broken exhaust manifold bolts.
Suspension is a dream on those cars. And the cars really haul ass.
And pray you don't get any CIM issues... Keep us posted. That is, of course, if the Volvo-heads are OK with it!
