2002 V70 2.4t NON-AWD Rear Shock replacement Topic is solved

Hi all,

Time to replace my rear shocks (confirmed by local shop). I can't justify the $500. I checked with the $tealership and have found that the correct part number (based on the VIN and an 8 digit # under the hood) is Volvo Part # 30736623

2 questions:

• brand recommendation(s) that is best bang for the buck? (I don't care about performance, or anything special, I just want something comparable to factory that is as good or better than factory, has proper fit, and won't cost me an arm and three legs. (And I don't want to have to replace them again in a year.) Googling that number, I've found shocks as low as $67 on FCPEuro (Sachs), and as high as $173 each (Local Volvo $tealership).

• Are there any tricks or special tools required for this job? It seems simple, but I don't want to get into it and find that I don't have the tools I need. local shop said there wee some special tools....I have not found a video or step by step specific to the 2002 V70 without AWD, so any guidance appreciated here.

These guys should last a couple of years and are not bad. Just don't expect them to be as refined as an original Volvo shock

If you can find the correct part for your car with the Volvo/Sachs yellow sticker it's worth the $20 extra money.

The top nut is something about 18mm or more, don't remember well but if it's over 18mm you may not have the wrench in your set. Also, it takes a torx socket to keep it from turning, anyway a good set of torx 3/8" sockets it's needed for many Volvo repairs. You just remove the nut from inside the trunk, the top plate stays in place.

You need to jack the rear of the car very high, to clear the shock when it will fall from there - most of the times I use a bottle jack under the rear arm to lift the hub some more in order to clear the shock. You may also compress the shock a little before inserting it. To catch the top hole, there is a cut in the top suspension plate, look with a flash light through it.

I just did a long-ish video today with most of the tools I use for this car, maybe give it a look

If your current shocks are worn enough anything is going to make the car feel like a F1 car.

The German made Sachs with silver stickers we get over here are OE spec or at least very close* and the ones I put on the car made it feel like new. Like new for these cars is not however anywhere near a sports car. For that you'll need to get something else.

In the end only you can decide how much money you want to spend.

Replacing them is just as easy as it looks. As above, just check that you have the right sockets and torx bit. Two screws to remove. On each end. Insert the jack under the hub and lift and you'll be able to remove it by compressing it a bit. You can even get away with doing it with the wheel in place and the jack only under the hub iirc. Add an extra stand for safety anyway though.

*some parts don't seem to be available in actual factory quality at all. Exhausts for example.

Another question - Can anyone tell me what the torque should be on the bolts and on the upper shock mount screws? this is the mount I am talking about:

Careful with that Meyle mount, don't throw away your old mounts (which would still be good in most cases)
