Volvo 850's (2017) Preferred rear brake pads?

Getting ready for winter (wasn't it just June?). Actually, I'm doing the 96 855 and the 93 854.

With so many options, have forum members reached any general agreement on the best compositions? Are any of the local chain brands worth a try?

I've got Kool Vue pads in the back of the 1999

Great stoppers but I can play Beethovens 6th at every light

I've heard those pads - they sure do sing - the way you'll know something is wrong and needs to be replaced is when the sound becomes bearable or even quiet

The Akebono pads cost money for sure, and mine squeak on rare occasions, but they grab decently when cold and they don't dust. I haven't found any other pads for these cars that strike that balance as well.

On other cars I've owned I've had good experiences with the AutoZone Duralast Gold pads. Probably worth trying out next time.

I prefer the OE pads, but they do create a lot of black dust. I have a set of Akebonos on the front of my 'R' fitted by PO, they work well once warm, low dust, but when cold they are not that great, even on the larger 302mm rotors on the 'R'.

The cheaper Akebono are not that expensive, and I surely won't go back to OEM once I've put Akebono on the front wheels. Before, the wheel was getting ugly after 3 days, now I barely clean it every few months. I think Akebono indeed have less bite than OEM at cold, not to the point of not being safe though. Also, no squealing even on a cold winter morning, and these wear slower than OEM pads.

As for the rear pads, I still have OEM installed, because the rear brakes really don't get dusty as much as the front ones.

Akebonos get lots of good reviews here on Swedespeed. One concern that comes up a couple of times is the "cold" bite delay during winter driving. Others say, yes, but you get used to it.

I also have Akebono ceramic pads on the front and OE blue box Volvo pads with steel shims on the rear of our '97 855 GLT (199k miles). This is my second set of both and I'm still happy. I have to clean the dust off of the rear wheels more frequently (~3 months) than the fronts. No vibrations or noises noted so far.
