My son stopped by yesterday for an oil change, mileage:
120,263 indicated +63462 = 183,725
FCP is back to allowing walk ins for parts so I bought the oil and filter there and we will
try the free replacement which they confirmed was still on. Got the Castrol 10W-30
full synthetic since it was the only name brand that I recognized and was the correct
type. They said just don't bring it back in a few days, rather wait until your next change.
It is leaking coolant and I see seepage at the radiator seams, we are just going to top
it up once a month for now.
Motor end is reasonably dry so it does not seem to be loosing oil, trans end is wet, with
trans fluid and we will check the O-rings in the Spring.
We got him a 2010 low mileage Ford Focus, he and his girlfriend use the two cars so
the Volvo is just being used for short trips to his work and school. School is long
enough to fully warm it up, so that is good.
We want to thank everyone here for all the great advice to keep this car running!

WHOA!!! You got ANOTHER car??? I began reading this post waaay back when you bought the car. I traveled with you through all the trials and challenges, all the fixes and failures, and NOW you went and bought another car?? This is horrible!! I’ve come to look forward to the updates, the “next chapter” if you will and NOW you’ve gone and bought another car??? Truly...this is a sad day. Even if is just short trips and shorter updates because of the “other car” please keep “The Wagon” story going....

Duration calculator says we've had this car for 3 years, 8 months, and based on our
start mileage estimate 83,725 miles.
Yes, this is the wagon that was hit. I bought 2 used doors for very cheap that are
in my garage. My son doesn't care about the looks, is super busy with work and
school, so is driving it as is. We will probably do the doors in the Spring.
They need 2 cars, so the Volvo will be used until something major goes wrong.
CEBirnley, we are going to keep the Volvo going for as long as possible, it has mostly
FCP parts in it so we get free replacements! Thanks for your interest and following along.

We were adding about a cup or two of coolant per year last year but
now they are up to that much per month. Its coming from the radiator
so looks like we need a replacement.
Anyone scraping an 850 with a fairly new radiator they might want to sell?
I should probably post a WTB.
I'll have to take a look to be 100% sure it is the radiator.

Just looked up new parts and the Behr is about $100 and Nissens is $107.
Comments say that the Nissens is a much better unit made in Denmark,
any reason not to choose it over the Behr?
I see a user states that it is made in Denmark, FCP says in Slovakia, not
sure which is true.

Manufacturer can have different manufacturing sites around Europe. Nissens is/was a Danish company, but many companies (including Volvo) have parts made in Eastern Europe as labor rates are lower. Parts are usually fine. I fitted a Nissens to my V70R in favor of the OE Volvo as I didn't like the way it is now made. Again bought from FCP so no worries there. It is well made and has a reinforced upper pipe connection which hopefully protects against the pipe snapping off like it did on my car.
Glad to hear the old car is still running!
Neil.

I will only go Volvo (Valeo) on a radiator. Historically, Nissens is hit and miss, perhaps related to where it happened to be made over the years, hard to know. Especially watch the connections. Valeo rad is consistently high quality (durable) .
Since it is only an NA (easier install than a turbo) and you are so close to FCP, if you don't mind risking the extra labor to swap if needed then maybe one of the aftermarkets is the way to go. I don't think there is much difference between Behr and Nissans.
