I need help with my Volvo!!

Post by vk960 »

I have a 1995 Volvo 960. I just bought it two days ago. It sat for one month before I bought it, and the previous owner said that it would run great. It does run great except for one problem. This afternoon, I was driving and all of a sudden, it seemed like the fuel cut out, but the car was still runnung, but when I put on the gas, it didn't go anywhere. This happened a couple of times, but it was very sparatic. Is the fuel pump bad, or do you think that there is an electrical situation that is telling the fuel pump to shut down? Hopefully someone can help me, this is my first foreign car, and I want it to be a good first impression.

Thanks------------John

A clogged fuel filter would be my first suspect. Mileage on cars usually helps us try to figure these things out.

Actually, I seldom figure anything out, but take these wild guesses which forces the real technicians such as carVolvo or Bill of Durham to come along and clean up my mess...

It sounds like it could be your throttle body. I have a 1998 V70, and I have had to clean the thing a few times. It seems that they are tempermental when they get dirty.

Same symptoms...a 20 minute cleaning and it runs nice again!!

It may be the MAS. When my MAS went it started acting like that. Bypass it when it starts acting up. Does it idle rough when that happens? If it does let it idle and pull the power from the MAS, if it runs smooth it's the MAS. I'm not a tech, this is my experience with my 87 740 230f.

A little more info would help, but check the warm up tube, it is the silver foil tube that draws warmed air from the exhaust manifold into the air filter box, the valve is supposed to only allow the hot air in when the engine is cold, sometimes the valves sticks and draws in hot air when the engine is fully warmed, that will cause problems running and eventually kill a good air mass meter.

Also, as with my '94, the electrical connections under the hood are only weather resistant, not weather proofs. So make cleaning and tightening connectors a regular maintenance item.

Also check your idle valve, it could be sluggish.

The sudden loss of turbo won't power the car more than 5 mph. Since it comes and goes, I would check the Wastegate for activating under a low boost if you have a turbo model.
