Angle Drive Installation

Post by caldwj »

OK, time to seek some guidance on an angle drive swap. My 2001 V70 X/C ate the angle drive at 320K miles. The seal on the pinion shaft failed, the slippery stuff got out and you can figure out the rest. When I pulled the drive the sump was full of ground up roller bearing pieces and the teeth on the pinion and ring gear were pretty well mangled up. It's a nice conversation piece now. I found a pull from Foreign Auto Salvage in N. Kentucky for $200 that only had 120K miles on it. The drive was in good shape and tight so I figured a reseal before going back on the car was worthwhile effort. I ordered a reseal kit from FCP Euro and went about the R&R of all seals on the drive. I also ordered a new splined coupling and seals to mate w/ the transmission.

My question is this - the collar on the RT side of the angle drive holds one of the (2) bearing races for the ring gear shaft assembly. What is the spec or procedure to seat the bearing race? How tight do you turn the cover w/ a spanner to preload the bearing before seating the lock clip and keeper bolt?
