Groaning when steering to the left

Post by Metallo »

Hi guys,

I am talking about my XC 70 (2005).
Last July/August I changed lots of parts, control arm bushings, wheel hubs, tie rods, rotors, pads and CV Joint boot (passenger side only) viewtopic.php?f=9&t=81809&p=444328&hili ... nt#p444328.

The car passed the yearly inspection, all good... ready to be given to my son just before university begins :)

Today, he told me that when making a sharp turn to the left, therefore at low speed, like 15mph, he hears like a groaning sound which seems to come from the front right wheel. No sound when driving and steering at regular speed.
I asked him if he could record a video, he said not easy because it does not do that sound all the time, but eventually he came up with something... it is a short video but you can hear that sound very well.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/i6fvi17m6jjd161/VID-20171024-WA0001.mp4

Now, I asked him to verify the steering fluid and he said the level is as expected.

Since I changed the right cv boot, I am thinking that the issue has something to do with the cv joint itself, but I have no clou unless somebody has heard that sound before and knows what it might be.

What do you think?

Alex

If I heard the sound from the video correctly it sounded more like almost a squeal. Stupid question maybe but did you check the rotor shields to make sure that they aren't rubbing against the rotor? I have had that happen before if they get bent during repairs just enough to almost touch the rotors. And then for whatever reason, they make contact when the wheel is turned. Other than just guessing I would say get the car up in the air and see if it makes the same noise. It should be a lot easier to pinpoint that way.

Hi,

I think to jack up the car will be the next step, my son will be here next week.
However, he has the impression that it is doing so because turning left the right part gets under effort, so it may not do it when up in the air.
Any ways, I will try and see if I get anything.

Thank you for your feedback!

Do you get to see and hear the video by clicking on that link? My computer doesn't read it. I tried installing some software and still nothing. What gives with these things? How may readers does one machine need?

Hi there,

you just need one reader for all: VLC media player https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

You can forget about all the others :)

There's two abnormal noises I hear in that video. One lower frequency noise, not the exhaust, that kind of sounds like somebody slyly passing gas into the leather seat. Or driving slowly on a completely flat tire.

Then toward the end there's high pitched squeak/squeal that sounds like locomotive/train brakes from a distance.

The low farty noise is either tire noise or (maybe) the rear LCA bush has weakened allowing LCA to contact/vibrate against the subframe around corners. The higher pitched squeal would either be a bearing or something rubbing against the rotor or wheel.

With the laptop speakers all I heard was the squeal. Not being sure that's what you were asking about I fetched the expensive Sennheisers and could then pick up on the low rumbly noise.

MrBrian,

Thank you very much for your thorough analysis.
My son just told me that when he was recording he was driving uphill, however I will take a look once he will be here, I changed the wheel hub one month ago together with all the rest, and I wouldn't know what could be possibly rubbing against the rotors, I would be very surprised if the shield is the culprit, but I will definitely check and report back.

Thank you!

I seem to recall a case where either the front stabilizer bar on one of these misaligned all the way to one side, and/or the end link broke, but remained attached at one end. Either the end link or the stabilizer bar would rub against the wheel or tire during a sharp turn one direction but not the other. You might have something like that.

Hi guys,

My son got in today, we went in a parking lot and I was able to capture that noise, it is now much louder.

Tomorrow I will jack up the car and will take a look.
