Tranny and CE Lights after PNP Replacement

Post by kubb7200 »

1996 850 non-turbo GLT wagon 227,000 miles

I've never had transmission problems. I replaced the PNP solely to get reverse lights again and pass inspection. Tried adjusting the switch using the reverse light method, but the lights stayed on through the entire adjustment range. Therefore, I adjusted it using a neutral start method. I placed the gearshift selector in neutral and rotated the switch until the engine started. Everything works as it should with the exception of the CEL and transmission light coming on after about 10 miles of driving. The car will then go into tranny limp mode. I will pull over, shut down, then re-start, and with the exception of the trouble lights, the car drives fine. Get home, reset the computer, then it does it again.

I always look inward first. Is my adjustment the issue? If so, why would the transmission operate fine in all shift positions, and is there another switch adjustment method? Is it possible the new switch is faulty? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I just gave VIDA a look and blindly picked a transmission and engine...

It looks like there should be a notch or mark on top of the shaft that should be nearly straight vertical and should match a notch on the gear position sensor. This is adjusted while the linkage is disconnected. Volvo special tool to do this is 999-5475 but I think you can do without it.

Wound up being a bad replacement PNP switch. Returned it and went with OEM. 200 miles later and no issues.

Glad you got there in the end. It is yet another unlucky bad part that had you chasing your tail. Unfortunately that is as discussed in another thread recently, an issue we all have, and in particular with aftermarket part suppliers.

At some point we likely should start a directory of "don't buy this" and "buy this" for aftermarket parts that work vs those that don't.

Volvo parts will almost always work, but I always like to test new and old parts to verify that what I think I repaired is what I actually repaired.

New parts aren't always good parts...
