2003 XC70 Turns over but won't start

Post by mts-13 »

This morning our XC70 would not start. Everything sounds fine, starter working - engine turning over, but not starting. Fuel gauge at 1/4 tank. No warning or messages. Any ideas - Please help - I am a long way from dealer so $$$$ to tow.

Probably the fuel pump. Did you notice rough idle prior to no start? if it's all of a sudden I'd say the fuel pump is kaputt.

Thanks for the advise - Not sure if it ran rough - wife's car.

Do you know where the fuel pump is on this car? Can I meter it or test it somehow to know if it's dead before replacing?

it's probably a fuel pump relay rather than a fuel pump failure, I've heard of this happening to others with your year/model. I am pretty sure the relay is behind the removable panel on the driver's side in the rear of the cargo area. there are a lot of posts here on this site that addresses fuel-pump, filter etc. here's one : https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... =fuel+pump

OK - I see all the relays in the panel in the cargo area but none are labeled. The op manual only defines the fuses no relays. I also found the access door to where the fuel pump is. Great idea to put the door there - Unfortunately they put the seat back right over it.

With the ingnition on (position 2) I can't hear anything from any relays or any noise near the access door.

I'll try and call the dealership & hopefully find a parts guy who can help.

Fuel pump relay is CMI 12 in the passenger compartment behind the sound proofing (in other words, it's not in the back as speculated). VADIS does not tell whether it is on the side (when you open the door) or if it's behind the sound proofing above the brake/accelerator pedals....anyway, Good luck!

Well - I give up.

I replaced the fuel filter and what I hope was the fuel pump relay. The parts guy at the dealer didn't know which relay was for the fuel pump. He asked me if I knew what the number was. I said "That's why I came here". So he check with a tech and came back with "I think it's this one". "I Think!!!!".

Anyways I replaced the relay that was in the only socket labeled "12".
I still had no gas at the check valve in the engine and no gas at the check valve at the filter.

I then went for the fuel pump in hopes to maybe measure the voltage going to it. I got the access door off but the seat back is directly above the hole. I couldn't remove the seat back and there wasn't enough room to get in there and measure.

Then my battery finally died from cranking every time I tried something new.

So now it's time to bend over and take it like a man as they flatbed my car to the dealer and gouge me for the repairs.

Thanks for all your help guys - I truely appreciate it.

It was the fuel pump. $794 + tow + initial diag.

Dealer drops tank to access pump. They do not use the access panel.

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone will have some further advise here. So I had the fuel pump replaced. A few days later the car smelled like fuel (bad) and was hard to start. The dealership towed it back in and said that they pinched an o-ring in the fuel pump. So they corrected that and sent me on my way.

But I still have cold start problems. I brought it back to them today and they now tell me that the computer is telling them there is something wrong with the mass flow sensor and it needs to be replaced. The service adviser said that she is going to speak w/ the manager to try and get me some type of discount. Oh boy!!!

Does anyone know if any of my previous problems or repairs could create a mass flow sensor problems?

Thanks,

Mike
