Car will not start cold or hot without cranking it twice.

Post by Smithc185 »

I recently picked up a 99 S70 for $350 for my step son. Truelly i have done nothing more then typical maintenance stuff. PCV system does need to be replaced and timing belt. Here is my problem I have to crank this car twice NO MATTER WHAT cold hot ect. I have replaced fuel pump with bosch fuel pump. I have replaced plugs with OEM plugs. I have replaced can and cank sensors. Fuel Filter. Misc dried out vacume hoses. Immobilizer antenna. TRUELLY i do not have a terrible amount of money into the car. Oh and brakes and rotors all the way around as well as all front end steering components control arms ect. I do have struts on order as they are bad. We love the car. Here is what my computer is picking up. i have a P0014 code I have already changed the solenoid with a working solenoid. that is the only code i can get from the car have put over 1500 miles on it. Car has 76500 miles on it. IF someone could point the in the rite path to fix this double crank issue i would be more then greatly appreciated.

Could there possibly be a 1 way valve on the fuel line that is not holding fuel pressure when you turn the car off?

Fuel pump check valve is integrated into fuel pump itself,but...additional inline check valve can be installed.
I suppose that you installed used fuel pump.

Double or long crank is often caused by the fuel pressure bleeding off when the car is not running. The fuel pressure needs to build back up before the engine gets enough fuel to start. A fuel pressure leak-down test would tell you if this is the case. Common causes are leaking fuel injectors and leaking fuel pressure regulator.

If injectors or FPR are leaking....the car would run like crap and extremelly rich.
These cars suffers from check valve failure in their fuel pumps.
On the other side....if FPR can't hold the pressure, car would also run like crap, but in this case because it would be starving for fuel.

I didnt mention. The car is GLT 2.4 turbo. The fuel pump has been replaced. the first try is a long crank it doesnt even try to start. let off the key crank again fires rite up idles smooth. so there is no fuel pressure regulator. i do not have a guage on hand but leave the car sit overnight and does have pressure at the rail.

Every fuel injection system HAVE fuel pressure regulator.
Some of these cars have them at fuel rail, some have it near fuel fiter and some have them at steering rack area. All of them have the same purpose.

i agree with you 100 %. But from research this model and it being turbo. There is a FUEL DAMPER But no fuel pressure regulator. The check valve on the fuel pump should be good as its a brand new pump.

Fuel pressure damper at fuel rail and FPR in fuel filter area or steering rack area. ;)
