$400! Cheaper key replacement? 2011 XC60

Post by instarx »

OMG, $400 for a key fob replacement from Volvo for a 2011 xc60! Anyone know of a cheaper alternative? I have one working key. It's a long story, but some jerk in another city who I don't even know stole my key.

VCC/VCNA and dealers need to consider 'not making every little thing' a profit center. You see this in general retail where some common use items priced at or near cost are used to entice people into the store where they'll usually buy a few higher profit items while shopping. Getting people into dealers to get keys made as older cars change hands would be a great way to introduce people to dealers/dealer service. VCC/NA/and dealers seem intent on scaring used buyers away from dealer service at get go by applying a high profit model to spare key/fob pricing sending used car buyers, who are typically more cost sensitive, anywhere/everywhere else in an attempt to get that price of a key/fob down by any means possible. I'm sorry, but key/fob software and subscription just to do that shouldn't cost a dime. I can see needing people logged in with a CC/billing/credentials on file to do this in order to combat vehicle theft, but it shouldn't cost anything. I also have serious issues with the idea of charging money for powertrain module software updates when the OE 'didn't get it right the first time'.

It seems there may be some luck for the P3 gen Volvo cars. This video appears to say one can program a new key without going to the main dealer. I don't know more details, and one perhaps still has to source a new transporter and key to be cut

Thanks anyway oragex, but as best I can figure out that software costs 500 EUR! lol. That is about $150 more than the replacement fob. Good try though.

My GF is the GM for a Maserati dealership so maybe there is some discount she can get. They occasionally get used Volvos in trade and I'm sure some won't have all their keys. There may be some inter-dealer arrangement/. I'll let everyone know.

My neighbor bought a 2015 Ford F250 with only one key. Ford and others often let you add a third key with some key on-off on-off sequence but with only one key requires connection and whatever to get a new key loaded. He called around and got $375 to $485 for the key. $375 being the dealer in a neighboring small town 35 miles away. That was metal key with integrated remote and included key cut and programming. $400 is in the ball park. Does the $400 include the ordering of the router cut key, the remote/elctronic key, and the programming of key to car?

$400 was a rough estimate over the phone jimmy57. I think it will be closer to $450, with $199 of that the actual fob and the rest programming charges.

Keys are cheap. Of the order of $50.

FOBS are more expensive

See if you can find a place called "The Keyless Store" near you. Franchised operation. Cheaper than dealer chipped keys and fobs.
